Elsfleth between sandy beaches and maritime history

Elsfleth offers two special ways to experience a stay: the river landscape at Elsflether Sand outdoors, and stories about the town and its maritime past. Whether you prefer to take a circular tour, watch ships from the beach or explore exhibitions, these different experiences give your stay a variety of different focal points.

Elsflether Sand and stories of the town

The Weser peninsula of Elsflether Sand lies between the Weser and the Hunte. Its expansive sandy beach invites you to swim and play in the sand; you can also watch ships there. The peninsula is also home to bird nesting sites. River conditions should be taken into account when swimming, and caution is advised.

The audio tour in the town centre offers another way to get to know Elsfleth: at twelve listening stations, you can hear stories about Elsfleth and historical figures. If you are interested in historical periods and buildings, you can also follow the historic town tour. It leads from the Black Duke monument on Rathausplatz to a visit to the Heye Foundation and St. Nicolai Church. Dates are available on request.

The church itself also tells the story of a long building history. Around 1500, it was expanded from a chapel; further extensions followed in 1633 and 1690. This lets you combine a stroll through Elsfleth with a close-up look at the town’s history.

Circular tours and routes along the Hunte

For a cycling trip with several stops, the approximately 20-kilometre “Elsflether Sand” circular tour is a good option. It crosses the Hunte barrage and the Weser peninsula to Dreisielen, then returns to Elsfleth via the Huntebrück lift bridge. The “Marsh and Moor” circular tour, which is also signposted, is longer at around 40 kilometres. It starts at the quay and passes through the half-timbered villages of Moorriem to the Gellen nature reserve. The distance and named waypoints help you choose between the two tours based on how much time you have and the stages you want to cover.

The Hunte Cycle Route is another way to explore the area by bike: it starts at the Hunte barrage in Elsfleth and runs along the Hunte to Oldenburg. Unlike the two circular tours mentioned above, this route heads towards Oldenburg. This gives you a choice of routes for planning your day: circular routes that return to Elsfleth or a route along the river.

Maritime exhibitions and experiences

The Lower Weser Maritime Museum in Elsfleth is a modern, interactive museum with numerous attractions and a ship-handling simulator. Haus Elsfleth, one of the three exhibition buildings of the Oldenburg Lower Weser Maritime Museum, is housed in the former Villa Steenken. The exhibition explores the diverse maritime development of the Oldenburg Lower Weser in the 20th century. The building also has a ship simulator that lets you steer a ship without a licence. Opening hours are seasonal and may change, so check the latest information before your visit.

There are seasonal ways to experience the area from the water, too: the Großherzogin Elisabeth offers day trips during the season. These usually begin in the morning at its berth on the Elsfleth town quay. If you would like to include a trip in your plans, check the dates in advance.
