In Suderburg, striking architectural history meets trails through the Hardau Valley. The almost 1,000-year-old tower of St. Remigius Church, the historic watermill and the water discovery trail give the village its distinctive character: you can choose a walk with historic stops or a longer loop towards Holxen.

Church, mill and local history

The tower of St. Remigius Church was originally built as a defensive tower. Today, the church is also an official cycling church and part of the “Church in Leisure and Tourism” network of the Evangelical Church in Germany. Suderburg Watermill, built in 1577, stands on Hauptstraße. It was most recently operated with a turbine drive; much of the grain- and sawmill technology has been preserved. In Suderburg, you can encounter both the long history of this church village and traces of milling craftsmanship.

Visits to the watermill can be arranged with Wolfgang Hinrichs on 05826/8573. Please arrange your visit in advance. A historic washbench was reconstructed based on the original in 1999 near the church. The Napoleonsbrücke (Napoleon Bridge) also tells a story of local history: it carried the Celle–Uelzen road over the Schweinebach, also known as the Sweensbach. The church, mill, washbench and bridge offer different points of interest if you would like to focus your stay on architectural and everyday history.

Circular trail and landscape in the Hardau Valley

The water discovery trail – Circular Route 3 is 7.5 kilometres long. It starts at the car park by St. Remigius Church on Burgstraße and runs from Suderburg to Holxen and back. Along the way, the route passes the former watermill and the Napoleonsbrücke before descending into the Hardau Valley. Its fixed length and circular route give you a clear framework for planning your day. Another hiking option, the Suderburg Circular Hiking Trail (WEP7), is listed as a local trail with GPS information.

The former irrigation meadows south of Suderburg offer a different perspective on the landscape. Some of these areas were reconstructed in 2001 and can be seen near the southern edge of the village in the direction of Räber. In the 19th century and until the mid-20th century, the irrigation meadows were used to water and fertilise the meadows in the Hardau Valley in order to increase hay yields. They show that the landscape is not merely a backdrop, but is also shaped by earlier agricultural use.

The wider Uelzen destination also has its own cultural highlight. The Hundertwasser railway station was created as a project for Expo 2000 in Hanover and is one of the last works by Austrian architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser. From the station forecourt, the “Path of Stones” leads into Uelzen town centre; it features 21 artistically painted rock sculptures. This places Suderburg’s local historical traces alongside a distinctive art and architecture theme within the wider Uelzen destination.

When choosing your holiday base, consider whether you would like to focus your stay mainly on Suderburg’s trails and history or also include attractions in the wider Uelzen destination. You can tailor your search for a holiday apartment in Suderburg to your planned excursions without having to commit to a single itinerary for your stay.
