Culture in the Wider Destination of Uelzen

The wider destination of Uelzen offers additional cultural attractions. Uelzen’s Hundertwasser railway station was created as a project for the Expo 2000 world exposition in Hanover and is among the last works by Austrian architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser. Art, ecology and modernity come together in this building. In contrast to Himbergen’s church, which dates from 1843 and features a late Gothic altar detail, the station offers a distinctly different architectural accent.

The Ebstorf World Map at Ebstorf Monastery was probably created around 1300, measures about 13 m² and is considered the largest known medieval depiction of the world. From 1 April to 31 October, guided tours lasting around 90 minutes are offered there, with explanations of the map. St. Mary’s Church in Uelzen also offers a point of comparison with the church in Himbergen: it was consecrated and elevated to parish church status in 1292, and its tower is 86 metres high.
