Hardegsen combines distinctive architectural history with an unusual way of exploring stories: alongside Muthaus and the last tower of the former town fortifications, the Fairy-Tale Trail draws on local history, fairy tales, riddles, and activities. This gives you a choice for planning your trip between historic buildings, a storytelling trail, and concert culture. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Hardegsen, you can decide whether your stay should focus mainly on local themes or also include other aspects of the wider Northeim travel destination.

Architectural history between Muthaus and the defensive tower

Built in 1324, Muthaus is Hardegsen’s landmark and also the oldest and largest surviving secular building in southern Lower Saxony. “Secular building” refers to a building used for non-religious purposes; the term helps classify this type of structure. Muthaus stands as a prominent building in its own right alongside the history of the town fortifications.

On the north side of Hardegsen stands the last of the eight towers that once formed the town fortifications. This brings together two distinct aspects of the area’s architectural history: Muthaus as a surviving secular building and the tower as part of the former fortifications.

Fairy-Tale Trail and concert dates

The Hardegsen Fairy-Tale Trail combines information about the town’s history with fairy tales, riddles, and activities. Unlike a visit focused on individual buildings, this trail connects local history with stories and activities. If you enjoy solving puzzles together and exploring fairy tales, you can choose this as a distinct part of your trip.

Concerts at the II. Burgmannshof in Hardegsen are listed for the last weekend of each month. If you would like to plan your trip around a concert, check the current concert calendar in advance.

Northeim as a wider travel destination

In the wider Northeim travel destination, the town wall adds to the picture of historic buildings. It was built between 1252 and 1305; about half of it is still well preserved. Northeim’s former pilgrims’ hostel, Sankt Spiritus, houses the town museum and is one of Lower Saxony’s most significant half-timbered Gothic buildings.

The fairy-tale theme also takes another form in Northeim: since August 2001, Theater der Nacht has been based in the premises of a converted old fire station in Northeim. It works exclusively with puppets, masks, and objects, and focuses on legends, myths, and fairy tales. Its award-winning programme includes 200 performances, courses, exhibitions, and lectures.

Northeim Touristik offers guided tours of the town, museums, and forests. The approximately 410 km-long Leine-Heide Cycle Route runs from Eichsfeld through Northeim and across the heath to Hamburg. This means the wider travel destination includes guided tours and a longer cycling route, as well as architectural and theatre history.

Another place in the wider travel destination is the Roman battlefield at Harzhorn. It is located in southern Lower Saxony, in the district of Northeim, on the B248 between Oldenrode and Ildehausen. The information building on site serves as the starting and finishing point for guided tours and events and is accessible without barriers. Because parts of the guided route through the site follow steep forest paths, it is not accessible without barriers throughout. Check the current conditions before your visit.
