Schweringen is described as an early settlement in the Weser valley, with sandy geest and fertile marshland. The village has the last Weser ferry in the Middle Weser region; it connects Schweringen with the eastern bank of the river.

Culture and History

Schweringen was first mentioned in a document from 1139 associated with the St. Paul’s Monastery near Bremen. Construction of the local church began in 1914; building work was suspended during the First World War, and the church was consecrated in 1922.

Since 2018, the Schweringer Fähre traditional association has operated the Schweringen ferry. The association is also working on documenting the history of the ferry service between Schweringen and Gandesbergen.
