Experience and discover the Elbtalaue
The Biosphaerium Elbtalaue in Bleckede Castle is an information and visitor centre for the biosphere reserve. Its modern exhibition on the birdlife and aquatic environment of the Elbtalaue covers more than 1,000 square metres. If you are interested in the natural environment of the river landscape, you will find a dedicated introduction here; you can also make the exhibition a cultural highlight of your stay.
The surrounding area also reveals different sides when explored outdoors. A walking route starts at the car park by the Biosphaerium Elbtalaue – Bleckede Castle and follows the dike and a sandy track. Along the way, it passes old arms of the Elbe, river meanders and oxbow lakes, then crosses the lock on the “Alte Elbe” towards Schäferei Heisterbusch.
Another discovery awaits you in Breetze, a district of Bleckede: At the Findlingsring, you can see erratic boulders from the Ice Age. They illustrate how the Elbe glacial valley was formed. The Findlingsring thus adds a geological dimension to the impressions of the river landscape. If you would like to include it in your travel plans, bear in mind that it is located in Breetze.
Castle history and townscape
Bleckede Castle is a listed historic complex dating back several centuries. Its oldest part is a historic tower stump from the 13th century. The castle tower’s viewing platform offers a 360-degree view of the landscape in and around Bleckede. The castle brings together a long architectural history and sweeping views of the surrounding area. The Biosphaerium, with its exhibition on the Elbtalaue, is also housed in the castle.
Another historical landmark is St. Jacobi Church in Bleckede. It was rebuilt in 1766 in the late Baroque style. Together with the castle, it adds architecture and local history to the nature-themed attractions. Guided town tours are also available for groups. Lasting an hour or longer on request, they provide a visual, cultural and historical overview. Tours are arranged through the Tourist Information Office.
Plan a variety of excursions
If you would like to explore Bleckede actively, a cycle draisine runs along the disused railway line between Alt Garge and Bleckede, passing through meadows, forests and the natural landscape of the Elbtalaue. The Bleckeder Kleinbahn is associated with historic trains operating through varied countryside between Lüneburg and Bleckede. These railway experiences differ from the walk along the dike and from the sightseeing opportunities in Breetze and at the castle. So choose the type of excursion that interests you most during your stay rather than treating all the stops as one continuous route.
