When looking for a holiday apartment to rent, the location is just as important as the accommodation itself: Barendorf is the oldest datable settlement in the Ostheide region and was already mentioned in documents in the 9th century. From a small farming village, Barendorf developed into a modern municipality with new residential areas. Local shopping facilities and essential everyday services are also available in the village, including doctors, the municipal administration and a savings bank.
The Winsen Treasure Register of 1450 records Barendorpe as a village with seven Hakenhöfe and one Kote; at the same time, the village is described as having a Wendish character. In 1291, Duke Otto of Lüneburg bought Barendorf back from the Lüneburg saltworks in exchange for three measures of salt and transferred it to Lüne Abbey. In 1529, Barendorf became the seat of the eponymous Vogtei in the Lüne district, which administered 20 villages and two additional properties.
The historic village landscape includes Barendorf Manor Park, a historic landscaped park with rare elements of reform garden design, which is protected as a cultural monument. During its redesign in 1919, a large bathing pond was created. The manor park is private; interested visitors are asked to register in advance.
Barendorf’s St Matthew’s Church was built in 1964/65 and has an especially bright interior thanks to its side windows. The church is reliably open from April to October.
A now-completed, 2.5-kilometre cycle path connects Barendorf with State Road 221 and closes a gap in the district’s cycle path network. The new cycle path is 2.5 metres wide and made of concrete; its route runs through a wooded area. Continuous cycle paths also run along the corridor of District Road 28 from Vastorf via Barendorf to Scharnebeck.
In the wider regional area of the Lüneburg district, nature parks and heathlands, the Elbe and its tributaries, mills, churches and museums are presented as opportunities for exploration. The tourism portal lists educational trails through fields, forests and along waterways, hiking trails through the heath, nature parks and biosphere reserves. It also covers golf, mini-golf, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, climbing and canoeing. Barendorf’s landscape also includes a large, probably Lüneburg Landwehr, which cuts through the village’s agricultural land.
