Discover Town History and Music
At the Amtsturm Museum, Lüchow’s history stretches from the beginnings of Slavic settlement through the Middle Ages to the devastating fire of 1811. The museum documents the town’s history of more than 1,000 years. The Amtsturm Museum is spread across two buildings less than 50 metres apart. The newer building also houses the Lüchow Tourist Information Centre. The layout and the location of the Tourist Information Centre are useful points of reference when exploring the museum and finding information in Lüchow.
Music enthusiasts will find a different subject at the Stones Fan Museum. Across around 1,000 square metres, it displays exhibits about the Rolling Stones and their former band members. Another Rolling Stones connection is the 34-metre-long mural on Gartenstraße. It was created in 2012 to mark the Rolling Stones’ 50th anniversary and depicts key moments in the band’s history. The museum and mural have different focuses: one displays exhibits, while the other depicts milestones in the band’s history on a large scale. In Lüchow, fans of the band can therefore encounter its story in two different forms.
Town Festival, Market Square and Amtsgarten
The Lüchow town festival traditionally takes place every year on the third Saturday in August and offers a family programme in the town centre. If you are looking for a fixed seasonal event during your stay, you can take this date into account when planning your trip. The family-focused programme complements the museum’s history and music themes with a festival in the town centre.
On the market square, a fountain features a historical depiction of two women weaving linen. Unlike the broad sweep of time covered at the Amtsturm Museum, this motif focuses on a single image from the town’s history. A rare handkerchief tree stands in the Amtsgarten; it is usually in full bloom in May and is a popular subject for photographs. If you are interested in plants and seasonal sights, May is an obvious time to look out for this blossom.
Two Church Buildings with Their Own History
The churches also differ in age and period of construction. St. Johannis Church is the older of the two noteworthy church buildings in Lüchow and is a Gothic brick building. On its west side is a stepped gable with plaster panels. This provides a specific façade detail alongside the historical context. St. Agnes Church was built in 1913/1914. If you include church architecture in your stay, these two buildings offer different historical reference points: the older Gothic building and the church dating from 1913/1914.
