The Weener local history museum is housed in a former poorhouse built in 1791. Its exhibits range from prehistoric finds to workshop equipment that was only retired a few decades ago. This brings very early artifacts together with objects from working environments that have only recently disappeared. The museum is listed as open on Tuesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 3 to 6 p.m.

The ORGANEUM focuses on music history. Its collection of historic keyboard instruments is housed in a villa dating from 1870. The three dozen playable exhibits include house organs, organ models, harpsichords, clavichords, grand pianos, and harmoniums. Their musical range extends from the Renaissance to the late Romantic period. From April to September, a guided tour of the collection is offered on Wednesdays at 3 p.m. This lets you focus your visit on the instruments and their different designs.

The history of the harbor is also visible in specific places. Weener’s Old Harbor is a harbor for traditional ships. At the harbor entrance, a bronze monument commemorates the “Törfwieven,” or peat women: it honors their hard work and the lively harbor activity of bygone times. The buildings lining the museum harbor are more than 100 years old. These harbor sights complement the collections with reminders of work and shipping.

Explore the Old Town and Local Routes at Your Own Pace

A walk through Weener’s old town passes St. George’s Church and the ORGANEUM before continuing to the Old Harbor. The Kaakebogen near St. George’s Church also brings the former separation between the ecclesiastical and secular areas to life: it marked this boundary and serves as a meeting point for public town tours. From May to September, these tours start at the Kaake-Bogen, Norderstraße 3, at 3 p.m. on the first Saturday of each month.

The 56.1-kilometer “From Struggle and Art” circular route runs from Weener via Stapelmoor into the Netherlands, then back to the starting point in Weener via Bad Nieuweschans and Bunde. Tour 4 is also 56.1 kilometers long and starts and ends in Weener. The same distance does not mean that these are the same route, so choose based on the route descriptions and your preferred destination.

Tour 9 is 34.1 kilometers long and passes through Weener’s districts, including Stapelmoor, Diele, and Holthusen, as well as along the Dieler Schanzen. A shorter option for getting outdoors is a circular route just over five kilometers long around the Meentelande near the town, suitable for running and walking. The North Sea Cycle Route from the Netherlands also reaches the Rheiderland near Weener. The routes offer different ways to enjoy an active stay, and you don’t have to follow the same tour for every outing.
