Holtland’s St. Mary’s Church is the oldest surviving church in the Hesel joint municipality and dates back to the 13th century. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Holtland can then continue searching for accommodation.
The original apse of St. Mary’s Church was replaced before 1500 by a Late Gothic polygonal choir. During renovations in 1787, the windows were enlarged and a wooden ceiling was installed in place of the vault. A Romanesque baptismal font made of Bentheim sandstone has also been preserved. The largely preserved organ was built by Johann Gottfried Rohlfs between 1810 and 1813. The free-standing bell tower, of the parallel-wall type, dates from the period when the church was built.
The three-storey Holtland Mill is a gallery Dutch windmill built between 1862 and 1864. It is fully operational and is described as a landmark of the municipality of Holtland. A café is housed in the former engine house of Holtland Mill. From May to September, various associations invite visitors to the mill café on Sundays for tea, coffee and cake.
On the Way
The third stage of the Wadden Route from Leer to Hesel leads through Holtland and runs through a flat, expansive landscape. After the Holtlander Nücke, the “Stone Axe” sculpture is located between Vorwerker Straße and Wassergarten.
The art sculpture “Dancing with the Wind” on Kleinbahnstraße in Holtland is also part of the stage.
