Marienhagen: Hiking Trails, Nature and Local History
Accommodation in Marienhagen
Marienhagen is a destination for travellers who want to combine hiking days with nature observation and local history. Several trails lead through varied landscapes: The Pottlandweg 1 panoramic trail runs directly through Marienhagen and offers views of the Külftal valley. The Pottlandweg 3, also known as the Quarry Trail, leads to the geological educational trail of the Weenzer Bruch and to Marienhagen’s disused quarries. This allows you to choose a holiday apartment in Marienhagen for a holiday in which each day has a different focus.
Hiking between the Külftal valley and the quarries
Those who enjoy walking on signposted trails will find another option in the Ith-Hils Trail. It is also well signposted in Marienhagen. Since 2014, the Hans-Froböse Trail has led to a shelter. From there, you can see the Külftal valley and the Külf ridge. The 14.4 km circular hiking trail Steinburchweg (DU3) runs from Duingen via Weenzen and back over the Duinger Berg. Along the way, it meets the Ith-Hils hiking trail between Marienhagen and Duingen. Depending on your preferred daily destination, you can therefore include a trail with panoramic views, a geological educational trail or a longer circular hike in your travel plans.
The disused limestone quarries are not merely destinations along the trails. A distinctive animal and plant world has developed on the calcareous soil. Up to seven different orchid species protected under nature conservation laws occur there; various species of lizard have also settled there. These details give hiking in Marienhagen a natural-history focus without reducing the town to a single landscape experience.
Church, organ and memories of the lime works
The town’s history also offers specific points of interest. The church in Marienhagen is a rectangular rubble-stone building with rusticated corner detailing and was built in 1796–98. The Marienkirche houses an organ built in 1857 as Opus 42 by Philipp Furtwängler & Sohn, with a total of 496 pipes. Among other features, it retains its original mechanical slider chests on the manuals and pedal, two wedge bellows, the treadle mechanism and Furtwängler’s iron action. The organ is protected as a historic monument and, following its restoration, was awarded the distinction „Organ of the Month“.
The local history room opened in 2002 and dedicates a separate room to Marienhagen’s lime works. Its history is explained to visitors there in an informative way. Important for planning: The local history room does not have fixed and regular opening hours. However, interested visitors can arrange an appointment by telephone. Another testimony to the town’s history is the monument to Friedrich Rogge, the founder of the lime works, in Marienhagen cemetery. One of the two surviving water pumps also stands between the residential building at Hauptstraße 84 and the road. Before the connection to the public water supply, it supplied the residents with drinking water.
The Paderborn Military Road is also part of the area’s historical context. Near Marienhagen, it followed the route of today’s federal highway 240. Thus, during your stay, nature, the town’s industrial history and older transport routes come together.
Ideas for families and varied holiday days
For a varied stay, the Marienhagen family swimming pool offers a swimming pool with a 32-metre water slide, a children’s pool with a sun shade and a kiosk. Children and young people can also get to know the Marienhagen art school: Various courses are offered at its building on Hauptstraße, where arts-and-crafts skills are taught. This makes it possible to combine active days outdoors with water-based or creative activities without limiting the holiday to a particular type of travel.
The panoramic trail and the Hans-Froböse Trail are ideal for hiking days with scenic views. Those interested in geology, plants and animals can include the Quarry Trail and the limestone quarries in their plans. For cultural impressions, the church, organ and local history room are the main attractions; families can also consider the swimming pool or the art school’s courses. The different themes give your stay a clear direction without requiring every day to look the same.
