Elze’s local history museum has been housed in the former Untermühle mill on Mühlenstraße since 1987 and presents changing exhibitions. The intact old mill belonging to the local history museum can be visited by prior arrangement. In addition, Elze offers guided city tours with a trained tour guide.
The town’s history is linked to the fire of 1824: it destroyed 258 buildings and Elze’s church, which earned the town the nickname “City of Fires.” In the Elze district of Wittenburg, Wittenburg Church was completed in 1497. Its west church is once again available to the community and visitors.
Elze’s Rast- & Bike facility is located directly beside the Leine-Heide Cycle Path. Alongside the River Saale, the facility has a pebble beach and a wooden deck. There is also a barefoot path for cyclists taking a break.
The 413-kilometre-long Leine-Heide Cycle Path connects the Leine Uplands, the Lüneburg Heath and Hamburg. In the wider regional area around Elze, the Hildesheim region has almost 500 kilometres of cycle paths.
Elze is located at the intersection of Federal Roads 1 and 3.
