St. Stephani: Church Architecture and History

St. Stephani Church stands out from other churches in the region because of its distinctive design. Its history also reaches far back: a baptistery on this site is mentioned as early as the 8th century. St. Stephani was once an archdeaconry from which the Bishop of Halberstadt advanced the Christianisation of the region. Here, distinctive architectural character meets an important historical role. The Schunter, the Millrace and the Watermill

The Schunter flows through Räbke in two branches: the main channel and a millrace built by monks in the Middle Ages. The water is also linked to the work once carried out by the village’s mills. In the past, seven mills in Räbke produced flour, oil and paper. Liesebach Watermill offers a tangible insight into milling technology and can be visited by arrangement. The river, millrace and milling trade tell different sides of the same local story: the landscape shaped by water and the use of its power.

Cycling and Swimming as Other Ideas for Your Trip

The Schunter Cycle Route, around 70 kilometres long, opened in 2019. It runs upstream from the Schunter’s confluence with the Oker at Groß Schwülper to the river’s source in the Elm hills near Räbke. Alongside the historical attractions, this offers a longer cycling route with clearly defined endpoints. An outdoor swimming pool between Räbke and the Schunter springs invites visitors to take a dip. When planning a trip, you can choose between a visit focused on the church and milling history, a cycle route along the Schunter, or a day at the pool. These options suit different interests and do not need to be combined into a set itinerary.

Cultural Attractions in the Wider Helmstedt Destination

The wider Helmstedt destination offers further cultural and historical attractions. The Imperial Cathedral in Königslutter is one of the most impressive Romanesque buildings in Lower Saxony. Together with the cloister and the Imperial Lothar Lime on the former monastery grounds, it forms a much-visited attraction. At the Museum of Mechanical Musical Instruments, guided tours explain how the instruments work; almost all of them are operational and ready to be demonstrated. The tour therefore combines explanations with demonstrations and makes for an experience for visitors of all ages.

The history of the university can also be traced through its buildings and collections. The Juleum Novum in Helmstedt, the assembly hall of the former university, was built between 1592 and 1597 as a palace-like Renaissance building. At the District and University Museum in the Juleum, a model shows the town of Helmstedt around 1750; original objects from the university’s time include an astronomical disc, a globe and tableware from the university canteen. Those interested in archaeological finds can see the Schöningen spears at the Schöningen Research Museum, close to where they were discovered. The spears were left there around 300,000 years ago and found in 1994; excavations are still taking place at the site. The Schöningen Discovery Trail runs for 2.5 kilometres from Burgplatz to the research museum and includes eight stops with large information boards. Thus, alongside Räbke’s church and milling history, the wider destination offers other distinct ways to explore architecture, university history and archaeology.
