Hämelschenburg Castle and its rooms

Hämelschenburg Castle is a Renaissance complex with art collections and gardens. The ensemble also includes farm buildings, a mill and a church. On a guided tour of the castle, you can visit historic rooms furnished with furniture, paintings and tiled stoves. The collections of porcelain, glass and weapons are also on display.

Walks lead through the Minnengarten to the soap maker in the garden pavilion or to the historic watermill with its artist’s studio. Bückeberg: Hiking and history

Another point of interest at the Bückeberg is the Bückeberg Documentation and Learning Site. The permanent exhibition, spread across the site since November 2021, shows how Nazi propaganda mass events staged media-ready images of a “national community”, fuelled social division and prepared Germans for war. Open guided tours lasting about 90 minutes are held regularly; no registration is required. Check the latest dates before travelling. The upper, accessible section of the exhibition includes a summary of the content presented across the site, a tactile model and information panels in plain language.

Agricultural machinery and farming in Börry

The Börry Museum of Agricultural Machinery and Farm Work presents 200 years of agricultural history in the Weser Uplands. Exhibits include old craft workshops, including those of wheelwrights, blacksmiths and shoemakers, as well as large outdoor equipment. The tractor exhibition includes vehicles dating from 1938 onwards.

The group of buildings is also part of the museum experience: it is listed as a historic monument and comprises a farmhouse, a barn, a sheepfold, a bakehouse and the old Niederbörry church. Gardens and cycle routes

Ohrberg Park in Emmerthal is known for the profusion of blooms on its rhododendrons and azaleas. The park adds landscaped gardens to the area’s historic and technological attractions.

For cycling, the Emmer Cycle Route provides a route through several towns: it runs from Emmerthal via Hämelschenburg, Amelgatzen, Welsede, Thal, Löwensen, Bad Pyrmont, Lügde, Schieder and Wöbbel to Steinheim. In Emmerthal, it connects to the Weser Cycle Route. This gives you a range of options for planning a day out: a signposted circular hike, a described cycling route, gardens and museums.
