Moated castle and church architecture: Aerzen’s history

The Domänenburg dates back to the 13th century and was first mentioned in a document as Burg Aerzen in 1293. The moated castle complex can be viewed from the outside as a tourist attraction. Aerzen’s Marienkirche was built as a cruciform basilica in 1153. At the Domänenburg, the focus is on the exterior of the complex; at Marienkirche, it is on its historic architectural form and early construction date. These offer two different ways to explore the area’s history during your stay.

Hiking trails for different levels

The trails vary considerably in length, which is worth bearing in mind when planning a hike. The “Rund um den Lüningsberg” circular trail goes around the Lüningsberg near Aerzen and is 13.27 km long. The AE10, also known as the “Zehner”, is a challenging 45 km circular trail with around 1,000 metres of ascent and descent. These details can help you gauge which distance suits your travel plans; also check local conditions before setting out. The AE10 can be reached from the church in Aerzen via trails 3, 11, 12 and 13. The Aerzen hiking marathon takes place once a year. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the date for the relevant year.

Another trail description leads to the northern edge of the Schierholzberg forest: the AE1 circular trail runs there. In addition to the two circular trails with specified lengths, Aerzen therefore also offers a route with a clearly identified landscape feature.

Swimming by season

The Hummetalbäder Aerzen offer indoor swimming in winter and outdoor swimming in summer. The outdoor pool’s water play park features a bubbling palm tree, a squirting fish, a spraying turtle, a water-jet tunnel and a bubbling spring. This seasonal switch between indoor and outdoor swimming is a practical factor when choosing when to travel: plan around the pool you want to visit and check opening dates before your visit. When looking for a holiday apartment in Aerzen, your travel dates and planned focus—swimming or hiking—can therefore help guide your choice.
