City history and parks

Since 1964, the Seesen Municipal Museum has been housed in the historic building of the ducal hunting lodge. The location itself combines a museum visit with a significant historic building. The museum grounds include a pond and remnants of the old ramparts; the park invites you to enjoy a relaxing stroll. If you are interested in the town’s history, this is an opportunity to include the museum and its surroundings in your stay.

The historic parks between Sehusa Castle and the Seesen Municipal Museum include mature trees, expansive meadows, walking paths and small ponds. Remnants of the medieval ramparts can be seen behind the castle. This means you encounter traces of history not only in the museum building but also in the parkland described here. The different features each offer their own impressions: mature trees and meadows shape the scenery, while paths and small ponds invite you to enjoy a more peaceful time outdoors.

Sehusafest: history, music and activities for children

The Historic Sehusafest has been celebrated annually in Seesen on the first weekend of September since 1975. The festival was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The programme includes re-enactments of battles from the Thirty Years’ War, featuring musketeers, pikemen and artillerymen. In the castle park, a Renaissance market showcases medieval crafts and handmade goods. The festival thus places historical presentations and traditional crafts on display at its heart.

Music is also part of the Sehusafest. Various music groups perform throughout the day on several stages across the festival grounds, playing music with a medieval feel. Activities for children include puppet theatre, axe throwing, storytellers and historic games. When planning, families can therefore consider whether they would most like to experience the historical presentations, the market, the music or the activities for children; the festival brings together all these different programme items.

Steinway Trail and Steinway Park

The Steinway Trail is an approximately 18-kilometre cultural and historical hiking trail from Wolfshagen in the Harz Mountains to Seesen. Along the route, eight information boards shaped like piano keys tell the story of the Steinway family and provide background information about piano-making. The boards also make the trail an opportunity to learn about a family’s history and a craft. Six stamps can be collected along the trail. In Seesen, two additional stamps for the accompanying booklet are available at Poststraße and the Seesen Municipal Museum.

If you are interested in cycling, Seesen’s Steinway Park is the starting point for five Volksbank-Arena Harz mountain biking circuits. The park also offers a walk past five ponds. A tree discovery trail provides interesting facts about various tree species. The activities can therefore be chosen according to your interests: the trail combines hiking with cultural and historical information, while the park offers mountain bike circuits as well as a walk and a tree discovery trail.

Cultural venues, Wilhelm Busch and the water park

In Seesen’s district of Mechtshausen, you can visit the home of Wilhelm Busch’s family, with its poems and illustrations, as well as his grave. Wilhelm Busch spent the last ten years of his life there. The visit offers another cultural focus alongside the museum and the Sehusafest: the home showcases poems and illustrations, and there is also the grave.

The Jacobson House is the socio-cultural centre of the town of Seesen. It includes event spaces, the town library and rooms for craft activities, workshops, meetings and community use. For exercise and relaxation, Sehusa Wasserwelt offers a swimming pool, a Cone Slide tyre slide in the children’s area and a sauna complex.
