In Liebenburg, historic buildings, landscape conservation and themed trails come together. Between medieval history, Baroque architecture and connections through the Innerste Valley, a diverse townscape emerges.
The medieval Lewenborch was built in 1292 by Bishop Siegfried II of Hildesheim. From 1750 to 1754, the former castle complex and the church were demolished and replaced by the Baroque palace and Baroque church.
The Baroque church contains an approximately 110-square-metre Baroque ceiling fresco by Winck, which was restored in 1985/86. Liebenburg Church is open during the day for quiet reflection.
The Hausmann Tower serves as a lookout tower with views of the Brocken. Liebenburg Sculpture Park is connected via the Strautetal valley to contemporary works along the Straße des Friedens, which runs from Paris to Moscow.
Liebenburg Palace Park is nestled within the Salzgitterscher Höhenzug landscape conservation area and the FFH area of the same name.
The Liebenburg Nature Experience Trail can be explored year-round and combines encounters with nature with educational interpretation. During a family hike, the trail provides information about natural cycles, geology and regional history.
The World Heritage Cycle Route connects five UNESCO World Heritage Sites – from the source of the Innerste in the Upper Harz to the confluence of the Innerste with the Leine. The World Heritage Cycle Route, which runs through the Innerste Valley, also passes through the municipality of Liebenburg.
