Bockhornerfeld offers two different points to consider when planning your trip: regularly offered Tai Chi and an Easter bonfire as a local event. One is an activity; the other is an occasion with a date you should check in advance.

An activity and a local event

Tai Chi is regularly offered as an activity in Bockhornerfeld. If you would like to include it in your stay, check before travelling whether it is currently taking place: the availability of the offer may change.

An Easter bonfire is part of the local events calendar. Before your trip, check whether and when it falls within your travel dates and what participation options are available. This way, you can treat the activity and the event date as separate planning considerations, rather than assuming that both have fixed times.

Nature and trails in the wider destination of Bockhorn

In the wider destination of Bockhorn, the Bockhorner Moor shapes the natural landscape. This 322-hectare protected area preserves a comparatively large share of the plant and animal species typical of raised bogs. The landscape includes heathland on cutover fields, birch trees on geest knolls, and rewetted peat cuttings with dead birch trunks. These varied landscape features define the character of the moor, without any single viewpoint or specific route needing to take centre stage.

There is a clear restriction on where you can walk in the moor: visitors may only use the designated, red-marked paths. Check the conditions on site before setting out. The “Around the Ancient Forest” route passes through Bockhorn, Grabstede, Neuenburg and Zetel, and through Neuenburger Holz at one point; its longest section runs through the moor, away from busy roads. The Geest Tour takes a different direction: it follows a geest ridge from Zetel via Bockhorn and Varel to Dangast. The two routes therefore differ in the sequence of places and landscapes described.

Culture and leisure in Bockhorn

Bockhorn’s history can also be seen in specific buildings. St. Cosmas and Damian’s Church is a typical Frisian church: built around 1200 from erratic boulders on an artificially raised dwelling mound. In 1720, the parish commissioned organ builder Christian Vater, a pupil of Arp Schnittger from the Wesermarsch, to build an organ for the church in Bockhorn. The church hosts Sunday and holiday services as well as concerts; check the current schedule before visiting.

Hemkensches Kaufmannshaus, also known as Haus Jürgens, stands on the market square in Bockhorn. It dates from the mid-18th century; its south-facing door is dated 1754. Erlebnisbad Bockhorn am Urwald offers a different kind of leisure activity. Its facilities include a heated swimming pool with a giant slide, floor-level water jets and water cannons, as well as a diving facility with diving blocks, a 1-metre board and a 3-metre tower. Seasonal opening and admission details may change; check them if you are planning a visit to the pool.

A guide to choosing a holiday apartment

For getting around Bockhorn, the B 437 runs along the western side of the main town and connects to the A 29. Varel is 10 kilometres from Bockhorn; Wilhelmshaven and Oldenburg can be reached via the A 29 in around 20 and 30 minutes respectively. Journey times may vary. The activities you have in mind can be a helpful starting point when choosing a holiday apartment: decide whether Tai Chi and the Easter bonfire in Bockhornerfeld, or nature, culture and leisure activities in the wider Bockhorn area, are likely to shape your stay more. For activities with specific dates or seasonal availability, it is worth checking the latest information before planning.
