Salzbergen: Museums, Gardens and Cycling Routes

Salzbergen has several very different sides: in the exhibition barn, historic washing machines and finds relating to local history come together; outside, a Bible garden, a bee education trail and a cycling route offer other points of interest. There is also the manor house at Stovern Manor and a traditional market in June. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can first consider whether you would prefer to focus on cycling, gardens and nature, culture or a specific event date.

Exhibition Barn and Firefighting History

The Salzbergen Exhibition Barn is used as a museum of washing machines, geology and archaeology, and also hosts special exhibitions. The permanent exhibition includes historic washing machines; fossils and artefacts document the town’s prehistoric and early history. The building itself also tells stories of earlier times: it is almost 300 years old and was used as a Heuerhaus, or farm labourers’ cottage, at the Mönning farm in Steide until 1946.

The Salzbergen Fire Brigade Museum focuses on the development of firefighting over the past 300 years. Its 800-square-metre exhibition includes ladder and fire engines, turntable ladders, pump engines and portable pumps, breathing apparatus, and small equipment from every era. There are also more than 200 helmets from Germany and abroad, including brass helmets, 19th-century leather helmets, Prussian spiked helmets and modern plastic helmets. Important for planning your visit: the museum has been closed since June 21, 2026, due to a move. Vehicles and exhibits are currently being transferred to the new building at Neuenkirchener Straße 20; reopening is planned for spring 2027. Gardens, Manor House and Cycling Tours

In the Bible garden, a narrow path winds past flowerbeds, flowers and shrubs. Small signs explain the herbs growing there. The bee education trail offers another distinctive feature: the Salzbergen Beekeepers’ Friends established it in Salzbergen on Am Emsradweg.

At Stovern Manor, the three-winged manor house has stood on a hill on the edge of extensive forests overlooking Salzbergen since the 13th century. The estate is privately owned; its garden opens to visitors once a month. Ask the Municipality of Salzbergen about dates and registration. Check current visiting arrangements before planning a garden visit.

The “Around Salzbergen” cycling tour is a 28.60-kilometre circular route with a very easy difficulty level and very low fitness requirements. It starts in Salzbergen and passes the 42-hectare Steider Keienvenn nature reserve. The section of the Ems Cycle Route in Salzbergen offers a different landscape perspective, with views into the Emstal Landscape Conservation Area. Many cyclists consider this section one of the most scenic stages. The two cycling options therefore focus on different aspects of nature.

Market and Planning Your Stay

The traditional “Salt and Oil Market” takes place on the third weekend in June. The programme includes market stalls, entertainment and a Dutch market. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for your chosen year. You should also ask the municipality about dates for visiting the garden at Stovern Manor; for the Fire Brigade Museum, bear in mind that reopening is planned for spring 2027.
