Nature

The protected area encompasses the Northern Wietingsmoor, the Freistatt Moor, the Central Wietingsmoor, and the Sprekelsmeer. Sections of the protected moor that have been rewetted contain open water areas, cotton-grass meadows rich in sphagnum moss, and moorland heath. The Freistatt Moor is largely characterized by extensive agricultural grassland use.

The protected area is important as a breeding and resting area for birds. Cranes use its grassland areas to search for food and as resting areas; some bodies of water serve as sleeping places for them during their resting periods.

Trails

A 3.3-kilometer planet trail with information boards runs along the light railway route between Freistatt and Heimstatt. The Freistatt light railway takes visitor groups into the moor and leads visitors along a historic railway route. The present-day route follows the same track alignment as the historic line along the old moor embankment between Freistatt and Heimstatt.

The sensory garden in Freistatt is a park-like, varied facility that engages hearing, sight, smell, and touch. The Freistatt visitor facility also includes the feature “Old Bakery”.

Culture and History

Freistatt’s history of youth welfare began in 1899. Haus Moorhort houses a public memorial to Freistatt’s youth welfare history, featuring exhibition panels, historical documents, photographs, and exhibits.

By 1911, four houses in Freistatt provided accommodation for around 250 boys aged 14 to 21. Services are held regularly at Freistatt Moor Church; its community rooms are also used for events.
