Otterndorf combines its location right on the North Sea with a historic old town and a wide range of water experiences. At the mouth of the Elbe, a water and landscape park with leisure activities lies behind the dike. The North Sea, the Medem and active days
Kap Jakob natural beach has grown naturally through sand deposits, is surrounded by a ring of reeds and is directly connected to the sailing harbour. It is also a meeting point for family mudflat walks. Those interested in the Wadden landscape will find a specific starting point here for planning their trip; the beach and reed belt also give the place a different character from a classic, open sandy beach.
Water sports in Otterndorf include swimming in the sea, kayaking on the Medem, stand-up paddleboarding on the lake, rowing, kitesurfing and windsurfing, water skiing and wakeboarding. The options range from activities on the river and lake to sports on the sea.
Cycling can also be part of your trip plans: several well-signposted regional, national and international cycle routes pass by the North Sea resort of Otterndorf. History and art in the old town
The historic old town is more than 600 years old. Its well-preserved warehouse buildings include structures dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. A prominent landmark is St. Severi Church, also known as the “Peasants’ Cathedral”. With its predominantly Baroque furnishings, it is the largest church in the Land Hadeln region. It acquired its present exterior ahead of the construction of the Dietrich-Christoph-Gloger organ, which was built in 1741. It is considered the largest Baroque organ in the Elbe-Weser organ landscape and was named Organ of the Year 2020.
The Johann Heinrich Voß Literature Museum is housed in the former rector’s residence, where Johann Heinrich Voß lived with his family from 1778 to 1782. The exhibition explores his life as a poet, editor and translator, publicist, friend and private individual. An audio station and a multimedia station offer insights into his life and work. Other art venues have their own distinctive character: The Museum of Non-Objective Art is an art museum at Marktstraße 10. Otterndorf Sculpture Park brings art in public spaces to life along the Medem and in the old town; its sculptures invite visitors to explore, pause, reflect and take photographs. The listed Neoclassical garden house is centrally located in the old town, surrounded by home gardens and the “Eschweide” park, right by the historic Süderwall.
Routes and leisure activities
The natural Philosophenweg begins at the orchard at the start of Müggendorfer Straße and follows the Medem to the See Achtern Diek leisure complex. This makes it possible to combine a walk along the river with a destination offering further leisure activities. At the leisure complex next to the “See Achtern Diek” campsite, there are three swimming lakes, playgrounds, giant slides, a climbing ship, as well as beach volleyball and skating areas. These different areas offer families various ways to enjoy an outing; the complex includes water-based activities as well as play and sports facilities.
For getting around town, the CUXLINER Strand-Express runs from the railway station through the historic old town to the Grünstrand and the leisure complex. In the old town, the illuminated ship “Onkel Heinz” is moored at Großer Specken and invites visitors to take twilight trips on the Medem.
