Osterbruch has preserved the rural character of a former small linear settlement. Grain cultivation and grassland farming shape the expansive marsh landscape. At the same time, horse breeding has made the village known far beyond its borders.

Culture and History

Osterbruch was first documented in 1207. The village church is believed to date from around 1200 and is dedicated to Saint Peter. Its free-standing wooden west tower was added later.

The history of the show jumping horse Deister is also closely connected with the village: Deister was born in 1971 at the Hahl stud in Osterbruch. A bronze bust of Deister stands in front of the village community centre. The Mühlenhof complex at Süderende 78/78a is home to a windmill built in 1871.

Events and Places to Visit

The hall at Dorfstraße 25 provides space for concerts and other events. The old grain mill in the south of Osterbruch is open to visitors.

Exploring Osterbruch and Cuxland

From Otterndorf, Osterbruch can be reached via the well-developed K16 road and a cycle path. The Cuxland cycling network extends for more than 1,300 kilometres. There are twelve signposted circular routes in Cuxland.

The Cuxland cycle routes include coastal sections, inland heathland, forests and moorland. They are predominantly flat and have little traffic, making them suitable for families and recreational cyclists.
