Osteel has a linear settlement structure because the village was originally laid out along the edge of a raised bog. The strip-field landscape known as “Osteeler Äcker” and “Langes Ackerland” can be seen in the direction of Leezweg over a distance of approximately 2 km. The Warnfried Church was built in the mid-13th century. It was originally an imposing cruciform church; in 1830, it was reduced to its present size. Inside, the remains of columns that once supported its vaults are still preserved. The furnishings include an elaborately decorated pulpit from 1699. The church furnishings comprise objects from ten centuries, including sarcophagus lids from the 11th to 12th centuries.
The Fabricius Monument stands in Osteel’s churchyard and was unveiled in 1895 in honour of the astronomers David Fabricius and his son Johannes Fabricius. It depicts Urania with a telescope, as well as a panel showing the solar disc and sunspots. David Fabricius was pastor in Osteel from 1604 to 1617 and discovered the variable star Mira Ceti. Johannes Fabricius was the first to discover sunspots.
The “To the Likedeelers” cycle tour reaches the northern edge of Osteel and then follows a marked route through residential streets to Marienhafe. The Red Route runs through Osteel and, on its return northwards, past the Warnfried Church.
In Störtebekerland, cyclists follow signposted routes using the junction system through villages, past old churches, windmills, meadows and wooded landscapes. The Tourist Information Office of the Marienhafe Health Resort provides cycling maps, prepared tours and literature, and assists with route planning. In East Frisia, there is an extensively signposted network of cycle paths spanning more than 3,000 kilometres.
