Hohenstein: Castle, Limes and Trails

The Hofgut Georgenthal in Hohenstein is home to the Limes World Heritage interpretation centre. The 5 km Georgenthal Limes circular trail, with nine information boards, starts at the Hofgut car park. Another option is the 5.5 km Hohenstein Limes circular trail, which takes in further visible Limes structures and has seven information boards. In direct comparison, the Georgenthal route is shorter and has more information boards; the Hohenstein route is slightly longer and takes in further visible structures.

In the wider Rheingau-Taunus District destination, the Upper German-Raetian Limes crosses the district for about 35 kilometres and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2005.

Culture at the Castle

Theater performances by the Taunusbühne take place every year in June and July on the open-air stage in the courtyard of Hohenstein Castle; some seats are covered. During the Taunusbühne Bad Schwalbach season, the courtyard of the Hohenstein Castle ruins becomes the setting for the castle festival each year. Walking Routes and Hands-On Stops

On the family yoga trail in Burg-Hohenstein, children and adults can try yoga exercises at 14 stations. There is a short 1.3 km route and a long 2.4 km route; the starting point is the information board at the community hall. The two route lengths make it easy to choose, while the stations provide a shared theme.

The nature discovery trail offers a different experience: it is an interactive learning space where visitors can take part in activities at the stations. It starts in Breithardt. Alongside the yoga exercises, the focus is therefore also on stations where active discovery shapes the route.

Cycling and Longer Excursions

The Aartal Cycle Route follows a short, steep climb of up to 9% to Hohenstein-Born, then continues on flatter terrain through Hohenstein-Breithardt. This change from a steeper to a flatter stretch is a distinctive feature of the route. For a special day of cycling, Aarstraße (B 54) is closed to motorised traffic for one day every year on the last Sunday in May. The route also passes through Hohenstein and is then reserved exclusively for cycling, scootering and inline skating. If you plan to take part that day, check the date for the relevant year.

The approximately 40 km riding and circular hiking trail passes through Hohenstein’s landscapes and by cultural monuments such as the Limes and the castle. Alongside the shorter routes, this offers further options for longer excursions, with landscapes and cultural monuments accompanying you along the way.
