Bad Orb – Salt History, Spa Park and Nature

Bad Orb combines the history of “white gold” with a spa park, half-timbered houses and trails into the surrounding countryside. The “Brine & Salt Experience Trail” brings this past to life on a walk of just over two hours: eleven stops lead through the spa park and around the old town. Along the way, discover Bad Orb’s transformation from a salt-producing town into a spa town and the importance of salt in the past and present.

Salt History in the Spa Park and Old Town

A guided tour of the historic old town also explores Bad Orb’s salt-making tradition, but focuses on different aspects than the trail: accompanied by an Orb salt boiler, it takes you to the 200-year-old saltworks. A tasting of local Orb specialities can be included on request. You can explore the subject either along a trail with eleven stops or in more depth on a guided tour with a stop at the saltworks.

Bad Orb’s spa park is home to the graduation tower, an open-air inhalatorium measuring 155 metres long, 12 metres wide and 18 metres high, with health-promoting effects. The teaching herb garden was also established there in 2000 to mark the spa park’s 100th anniversary. Designed as a natural teaching and display garden, it features more than 200 different herbs and medicinal plants. Near the Philippsquelle spring, at Quellenring, there is also a walk-through labyrinth with seven circuits; a sycamore maple stands at its centre.

Half-Timbered Houses and Local History

Kirchgasse is Bad Orb’s last street consisting entirely of half-timbered houses. At its end stands the “Smallest House”, an extension in front of the main house. The Bad Orb Museum, housed in the former castle, offers another way to explore the town’s history: it covers Bad Orb’s historical development, the heyday of “white gold” and the history of the salt boilers. Together, the experience trail and guided tour show how closely the town’s salt history is connected with its many places and stories.

Trails Through the River Meadow Landscape and Spa Park

Those who want to explore Bad Orb outdoors will find a variety of trails. The barefoot trail takes you barefoot through the Orb Valley’s river meadow landscape and features numerous interactive stops. In the Hasel Valley, a trail along the Hasel provides a route for nature walks: it leads into the valley from the Old Railway Station at the entrance to the old town. The Spessart Trail 3 also runs through Bad Orb’s spa park.

On Molkenberg, the nine-metre-high watchtower is both a viewpoint and a starting point for hikes. By contrast, the Hasel Valley route focuses on the trail along the Hasel, while the barefoot trail combines its interactive stops with a walk through the river meadow landscape. These nature experiences range from a valley trail to a viewpoint, without requiring everyone to explore in the same way.
