Obersuhl offers a varied mix of protected nature, German border history and regional excursion destinations. Families looking to combine different interests will find ideas here for birdwatching, walks, historical discoveries and a day at the pool. When choosing a holiday apartment in Obersuhl, you can therefore consider whether your trip should focus more on nature experiences, culture or a varied combination of both.

Experiencing Nature in the Rhäden and the Obersuhler Aue

A particular attraction is the approximately 250-hectare “Rhäden” nature reserve. More than 250 bird species have been recorded there. The area is a wetland with swamp forest; along an approximately 8-kilometre circular trail, there are covered birdwatching stations. The circular trail can be explored on foot or by bicycle. If you want to spend plenty of time in the landscape, the Rhäden can be planned as a full-day excursion, while the stations provide specific observation points for travellers interested in nature.

The “Obersuhler Aue” FFH site also characterises the natural landscape. The extensive, uninterrupted river floodplain serves as an important resting place and breeding habitat for meadow birds. Those particularly interested in birds, wetlands and open landscapes can take these focal points into account when planning their trip. The different nature themes provide an opportunity to alternate between an active day on the circular trail and quieter moments of observation.

Border History and Regional Culture

At the centre of Obersuhl stands a sandstone-built church. Its tower and chancel date from 1518. When the church interior was renovated in 2002, the nave was given modern ceiling and wall paintings by Tobias Kammerer. Medieval architectural elements and more recent artistic design therefore come together at this site. The church is consequently an interesting destination for anyone wishing to compare historical architecture and art.

The “Auf der Wache” Border Museum offers another perspective on the region’s history. Photographs and exhibits document the history of the division of Germany from the end of the war until reunification. The approximately 800-metre border trail at the edge of Wildeck-Obersuhl, leading towards Gerstungen, provides an introduction to the subject. The border trail is accessible year-round and can be explored independently.

Other Destinations in the Surrounding Area

The wider area around Obersuhl, including the Wildecker Tal valley, offers the Blumenstein ruins, Wildeck Castle, the Inselsteich pond and an obelisk. The surviving masonry of the Blumenstein ruins belongs to Blumenstein hunting lodge, built later in 1727. The Wildeck-Obersuhl Nature Conservation Information Centre complements these destinations with an exhibition illustrating connections between nature and the landscape. For visitors interested in nature, it offers an opportunity to learn about these topics in an informative and accessible way. For an excursion combining several historical and landscape-related points of interest, the Wildecker Tal thus opens up an additional regional perspective.

For a change of pace on warm days, there is the heated Obersuhl outdoor pool on Vohlstraße. During the summer season from May to early September, it features a 3-metre diving tower, a water slide and a volleyball court. Depending on your preferred travel theme, you can therefore use your holiday apartment in Obersuhl as a base for exploring nature and culture or for planning a trip that also includes a visit to the outdoor pool.
