Gernsheim combines water, trails through nature and a distinctive festival tradition. On the southern edge of the town lies Gernsheim swimming lake, with its large sandy beach. Swimming Lake and Municipal Forest
The swimming lake covers about 4.6 hectares. Its size and sandy beach give the area a clear connection to the water. Use of the lake is free of charge; dogs are not allowed there. If you are travelling with a dog, this restriction should therefore be part of your plans for a visit to the lake. The lake’s water quality has been rated excellent for years.
If you prefer exploring on foot, there are other options: a total of five hiking trails have been created in the Hammeraue and Gernsheim municipal forest. Ranger-led tours by the Bergstraße-Odenwald Geo-Nature Park are also available in the municipal forest and can be booked on request. They are intended for interested visitors as well as school classes and kindergartens. A guided tour and a walk of your own choosing are therefore different ways to experience nature in the municipal forest.
The Hessian long-distance cycle route R6 also passes through Gernsheim. It runs from Lampertheim to Warburg. If you would like to include a cycling trip in your holiday plans, you can consider Gernsheim as a stop along this long-distance route; the named endpoints indicate its wider regional scope.
Festival Tradition and Pilgrimage
The Rhine Fishermen’s Festival has a distinctive history: it was founded in Gernsheim on 28 April 1949 as a festival of reconciliation between professional and recreational anglers. Its festival grounds have been at Gernsheim harbour point since 1949. The founding date and purpose give a tangible sense of the festival’s connection to local fishing and angling traditions. When planning your trip, it is important not to mistake the festival’s founding history for a specific event date.
Maria Einsiedel is located near Gernsheim. The chapel that stands today was built in 1495 to replace a predecessor church that had fallen into disrepair. This pilgrimage site has both an annual highlight and significance throughout the year: the main pilgrimage takes place on the first Sunday in July, on the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, while pilgrims visit Maria Einsiedel all year round. Maria Einsiedel is a place of peace and reflection.
A youth centre has been located at the pilgrimage site since 1956. Today, the Diocese of Mainz runs it as a youth hostel and educational centre. This use adds an educational dimension to the site’s religious and contemplative character.
Which focus suits your stay?
When choosing a holiday apartment in Gernsheim, you can consider which of these experiences you want to shape your trip: time at the lake, trails in the Hammeraue and municipal forest, a bike ride on the R6 or a visit to Maria Einsiedel. If you are particularly interested in the pilgrimage, the first Sunday in July is a specific annual date to note. For the swimming lake, the rule about dogs is a practical distinction; nature enthusiasts can book ranger-led tours on request.
