Mörlenbach combines marked hiking trails and orchard meadows with insights into the town’s history. It also has a special railway tradition: the Überwaldbahn line runs through the municipality and has been out of service since 1994. The solar-powered rail bike lets visitors travel around 10 kilometres between Mörlenbach and Wald-Michelbach along its historically significant, listed route. The rail-bike circular trail has also been open to walkers since summer 2017.

Hiking between nature trails and orchard meadows

The municipality has around 125 kilometres of marked hiking trails. For a specific outing, the nature trail offers an 8-kilometre route, with a suggested walking time of 2 to 3 hours. It is important to take the surface into account: outside the woodland sections, the trail is suitable for pushchairs. This is not the case in the wooded areas north of Waldsee and in Steinböhl. Sturdy footwear is essential there, as parts of the trail are boggy.

The orchard meadow trail in Mörlenbach offers a different kind of landscape. It passes through orchard meadows and affords panoramic views. This gives you several ways to enjoy the outdoors: a longer marked hike, a trail with a clearly stated walking time, or a route focused on orchard meadows and views. Which one suits your stay depends on how much time you want to set aside for an outing and what kind of landscape you would like to experience.

The Weschnitztal Geopark local team offers town tours, hikes and walks through the landscape for visitors, locals and newcomers, with groups being a particular focus. Groups can explore old Mörlenbach with a guide, visit burial mounds dating from the Neolithic period and discover the surrounding landscape. This is a way to combine experiencing nature with a look at the area’s earlier settlement history.

Local history in Mörlenbach and Bonsweiher

The Protestant church, built in 1950, stands in the centre of Mörlenbach. The museum in Bonsweiher offers a broader insight into the municipality’s history. It opened in November 2015 in the heritage-restored Old School and focuses in particular on former school life, the fire service and leatherworking. The church has a specific construction date, while the museum brings together several themes from the municipality’s history.

More places to discover in the Bergstraße region

The Bergstraße region also offers its own ideas for planning a trip. In the Bergstraße district, gentle vineyards meet the Odenwald. In Heppenheim, the “Wine & Stone” discovery trail runs for about 6.9 kilometres and features around 70 information stations. The annual autumn hike there takes place on 3 October from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Along the route, hikers can enjoy wines and food at five stations in the vineyards. If you are planning to attend, check the latest details before your trip.

The region’s wines also give the Bergstraße its own character: Riesling is its typical white wine grape, while Pinot Noir dominates among the red wines. Visitors can sample Red Riesling and other Bergstraße specialities directly from producers, in wine taverns or at wine festivals. For those interested in culture, Lorsch Abbey is another distinct highlight in the Bergstraße region. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991; it is home to one of the best-preserved Carolingian buildings north of the Alps. Public guided tours are available for groups of two or more; check the current tour times before your visit.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Mörlenbach, you can start by considering whether hiking trails, orchard meadows or local history will shape your stay. If you would also like to include wine or cultural experiences in the Bergstraße region, plan for each destination separately.
