Abtsteinach: Art Trail, Quarry and Odenwald Tours

Abtsteinach combines an art trail with hiking destinations at the Mackenheim quarry and tours with clearly stated elevation profiles. More than 130 weather-resistant sculptures and paintings are permanently installed along the art trail. Sculpture and painting stand side by side here; the Church of St. Boniface in Ober-Abtsteinach adds a cultural accent with a single building dating from the 17th century. At the Mackenheim Quarry: Views and Habitat

The A 6 Quarry Trail is about 12 kilometers long and covers 404 meters of elevation gain. A detour leads to the Mackenheim Geopoint, from where you can look out over the quarry. In 2025, a Geopoint ensemble at the Mackenheim quarry viewing platform was renovated. This gives you concrete points of reference when choosing a tour: an approximate route length, the elevation gain and a view into the quarry.

The quarry’s reclaimed areas are also noteworthy: they provide a habitat for endangered animal and plant species. These include sand lizards, yellow-bellied toads, greenfinches and eagle owls; rare plants mentioned include hare’s lettuce and common centaury. The nature theme at the quarry therefore extends beyond the viewpoint to include a variety of animal and plant species.

Compare Hiking Trails and the Mountain Bike Route

The A 1 Panorama Trail passes five Odenwald elevations over 500 meters high. It is about 17 kilometers long and has 972 meters of elevation gain. By comparison, the A 6 Quarry Trail is shorter, at about 12 kilometers, and has less elevation gain, at 404 meters. Distance and elevation gain give you two concrete points of reference when comparing the hikes.

Another option for active vacation days is the A1 – Abtsteinach mountain bike route. It runs for 27 kilometers, with 830 meters of elevation gain, around Abtsteinach. Its technical difficulty is considered relatively low, but the fitness requirement should not be underestimated. The two assessments should be considered together: a relatively low technical difficulty does not mean that the endurance requirement is also low.

A Seasonal Option in Winter

When there is enough snow, members of the SGU Ski Club groom the Hardberg cross-country ski trail. Whether this winter option suits your travel plans therefore depends on snow conditions. Check in advance whether conditions are suitable for the trail. This helps distinguish the seasonal activity from the routes and art trail described as available year-round.

The Bergstraße as a Wider Travel Destination

In the wider Bergstraße travel destination, rolling vineyards meet the Odenwald in the Bergstraße district. The “Wine & Stone” experience trail in Heppenheim offers a distinctive wine-and-hiking experience: it is about 6.9 kilometers long and has around 70 information stations. An autumn hike is held there every year on October 3, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Along the route, hikers can enjoy wines and food at five stations in the vineyards.
