The Weschnitz and Einhäuser Bruch

The Weschnitz has been undergoing renaturalisation in Einhausen town centre since 2006. This is creating an expanding habitat where breeding sites for kingfishers and moorhens have been recorded. Walks along the Weschnitz promenade offer a good view of the changes to the riverbed—a concrete reason to take a closer look at the river’s course.

The Einhäuser Bruch reveals a different side of the landscape: old river courses lie around two to three metres below their surroundings. Wet and acidic meadows alternate with carr, swamp and floodplain forests. Its inhabitants include common spadefoot toads and natterjack toads; more than 23 bird species also live here. Together, the river and the Bruch offer a variety of natural features to discover while exploring the area.

Townscape and small discoveries

The historic Old Town Hall and a new town hall building from the 1970s stand side by side in the market square. The contrast is immediately visible in the townscape: two town hall buildings from different eras share the same square. If you are interested in built heritage as well as nature, you can take a moment to appreciate this ensemble.

Near Einhausen, in the Lorsch municipal area, the stone Wattenheim Bridge crosses the Weschnitz. It dates from the late 18th century. Another notable place is the “Red Cross” wayside shrine, which has a rest area: seating beneath a large weeping willow offers a chance to linger. Both places have their own character and should not be confused with the sights in the town centre.

Get active: walks, fitness trail and cycling route

The fitness trail in the west of Einhausen is over 2.4 kilometres long. In Jägersburg Forest, it crosses glacial sand dunes and passes through stands of old oak, beech and pine trees. Exercise equipment that can be used at any time is positioned along the route. If you want to combine exercise with views of the forest and terrain, this offers a different way to spend your time than walking along the Weschnitz promenade.

For longer excursions, the family adventure cycling route Ried connects Einhausen with Groß-Rohrheim, Biblis, Bürstadt and Lampertheim; it is about 60 kilometres long. The routes on offer therefore differ considerably in length: the fitness trail is over 2.4 kilometres long, while the Ried route forms a roughly 60-kilometre connection through five municipalities. In Heppenheim, the “Wine & Stone” adventure trail is about 6.9 kilometres long and has around 70 information stations. The annual autumn hike along the trail takes place on 3 October from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; along the way, you can enjoy wines and food at five stations in the vineyards.
