Town history in fieldstone and brick
Templin’s medieval fieldstone wall is 1,735 metres long and up to seven metres high. You can stroll along the restored fortifications, which include three Gothic brick gates, two towers and 47 Wiekhäuser. The Prenzlauer Tor is Templin’s newest and most complete brick gate. Its historic setting brings the town’s more than 750-year history to life.
The small St. George’s Chapel dates from the 14th century and was built in the Brick Gothic style. Inside is a wooden sculpture from the 16th century depicting the patron saint George on horseback, in full armour and fighting a dragon. The scene brings the chapel’s architectural history to life.
Rühlstraße also has its own distinctive historic townscape: lovingly restored half-timbered houses dating from around 1740 line the street in a continuous perimeter block. St. Mary Magdalene Church was rebuilt in the Baroque style on the foundations of its Gothic predecessor after the fire of 1735. The half-timbered houses and church reveal different chapters in Templin’s architectural history.
Explore the old town on foot, enjoy culture and spend time by the water
The Archaeological Town Tour leads through the historic old town, passing Market Square and Church Square, among other places, and continuing to the town wall. Ten information boards provide background on the finds at each location. Guided town walks are also offered on Tuesdays and Saturdays, sharing interesting facts and anecdotes about Templin. The Multikulturelles Centrum hosts a year-round programme of cinema, theatre, cabaret, readings, exhibitions and concerts. On Templin’s town lake, below the Weinberg, a small bathing area lies directly beside the waterside path. Alongside its historic sights, Templin offers culture and time by the water as different ways to spend your days.
