Visitor centre, tours and views

The “excursio” visitor centre is located in the former railway station in the centre of Welzow. It provides information about tours and other activities and events in and around the town; its topics range from the changing landscape to the Lusatian Lake District. Separate from these are the regularly scheduled experience tours into the active Welzow-Süd open-cast mine and the post-mining landscape. Several viewpoints on the edge of the Welzow-Süd open-cast mine, in its surrounding area, offer views of the mine and the reclaimed landscape. From the “Süd” viewpoint, the coal seam, the F60 conveyor bridge and other overburden excavators at work are part of the panorama. From there, you can take in the technical installations and the surrounding landscape together. Viewpoints and experience tours thus offer different perspectives on the mine and its surroundings.

Discover and take part through play

The open-cast mining-themed playground offers children of all ages a range of ways to play. These include creative climbing structures and media-based activities about mining and the surrounding natural environment. Children can learn more about the town’s history and the open-cast mine. Here, movement and discovery go hand in hand, while the viewpoints draw attention to the mine and its reclaimed surroundings. For families, this makes a practical difference when planning the day: you can choose between a playful introduction and a landscape-focused perspective.

At the Archaeotechnology Centre Welzow, archaeology is a hands-on subject. The centre is an interactive museum with a large outdoor area and the exhibition “People – Wood – Archaeology”. Its annual programme includes events and workshops for the general public; registration is required to take part. This makes it possible to combine a visit with a specific programme activity, provided you plan ahead and register.

Fire service history in Welzow

Welzow Fire Service Park houses one of Germany’s largest collections on fire service history. On display are historic fire engines, equipment, uniforms and a fire-fighting tank. The collection therefore offers a different cultural focus from the Archaeotechnology Centre: here, the emphasis is on fire service history, its vehicles and its equipment. The Fire Service Park is open seasonally on weekends, so take its opening hours into account when planning your visit.

More perspectives in the Spree-Neiße destination
