Kolkwitz can be discovered on several levels: along the “Around Kolkwitz” circular route, through the history of the former hospital, and via cultural and scenic attractions in individual districts of the municipality. When choosing a holiday apartment, it is worth first weighing up which interests you want to shape your stay. An outing on the circular route raises different questions than a focus on church history, the Spreewald landscape or equestrian sports.

A circular route through changing landscapes

The “Around Kolkwitz” circular route offers a 12-kilometre shortcut through Kolkwitz, or Gołkojce. In the surrounding area, it follows forest, field and meadow paths and passes ponds, pools and alder carrs; gentle hills in pine and mixed forests add to the landscape. The route thus connects open areas and wooded sections with different types of waterscapes. If you would like to include a specific nature route in your holiday plans, this circular route is a clearly identifiable option.

Local history and culture in the districts

The former Kolkwitz hospital was inaugurated on 13 June 1900. You cannot currently visit it, either independently or as part of a guided tour: the grounds are private property, and entry is not permitted. In Papitz, a district of the municipality, the Late Gothic church has a 37-metre-high tower, a church bell dating from 1396 and a historic organ from 1827/28. In Kackrow, the Knabe family has set up a toy museum. The church combines Late Gothic architecture with two dated items of its furnishings; the museum offers a different cultural focus.

The Spreewald landscape across the municipality

The Kolkwitz districts of Babow and Milkersdorf, along with part of Papitz, are part of the Spreewald Biosphere Reserve. You can also experience a typical Spreewald landscape on the old local road between Papitz and Milkersdorf and on the road connecting Kunersdorf and Papitz, where rows of trees separate fields and meadows. The combination of open areas and rows of trees adds a different landscape perspective to the circular route’s forests, ponds and pools.

Equestrian sports and Oberteich

The municipality also offers various options for active stays. Seven riding stables offer activities such as riding holidays, horse breeding and riding lessons. Papitz is known for an annual dressage and show-jumping tournament; if you would like to plan your trip around the tournament, check the date for your travel year. The approximately 35-hectare Oberteich is located in Glinzig and opened as a fishing pond in 1992. With a little luck, anglers can catch pike, zander, catfish and eel there. These different interests may play a role when choosing your holiday apartment: equestrian sports, riding activities across the municipality or Oberteich in Glinzig.

The wider region: Spree-Neiße

For a broader regional perspective, the wider Spree-Neiße destination offers additional landscape and cultural themes. The Spreewald is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and a distinctive inland delta landscape. The Spree Cycle Route crosses Spree-Neiße for approximately 60 kilometres and runs mostly along paved river dikes. The Sorbian Impressions tour offers a cultural focus, providing insights into the lives and traditions of the Sorbian/Wendish minority living in the region. This makes it possible to distinguish the specific attractions in Kolkwitz and its districts from the broader landscape and cultural themes of Spree-Neiße.
