There are different ways to discover Beetzseeheide: an 11.4-kilometre circular hiking trail leads through the Middle Havel Lowlands Bird Sanctuary, while the village churches in Ketzür and Gortz feature remarkable details from different periods. The Ketzür post mill is another special stop in the area. This means you can choose your own focus for your trip, whether nature, architectural history or milling traditions.

Exploring Beetzseeheide on foot

The Beetzseeheide circular hiking trail connects the villages of Butzow, Ketzür and Gortz. At 11.4 kilometres long, it gives you a clear indication of the distance when planning it into your day. The route passes through the Middle Havel Lowlands Bird Sanctuary.

The three villages named above give the circular trail a clear geographical orientation. Those who choose this route can experience the villages and their sights as different aspects of Beetzseeheide. The trail’s length and its route through the bird sanctuary are distinct features: one helps you estimate the distance, while the other describes the landscape it passes through.

Village churches with stories of their own

The village church in Ketzür stands out for its largely lavish and very well-preserved furnishings from the early 17th century. A painted wooden ceiling and murals define the interior. The paintings depict Christ and the twelve apostles. These motifs also make the furnishings interesting to visitors who pay particular attention to historic church art on an outing.

The history of the church building goes back further: in the 15th century, the western section was raised above an irregular octagonal structure with an apse dating from the 13th century, and a tower was added. Thus, older structural elements and later alterations stand side by side in Ketzür; the furnishings from the early 17th century add another distinct historical layer.

The village church in Gortz has a different architectural character. The Late Gothic fieldstone building, with brick quoins, was constructed between 1450 and 1500. Inside, the altar and pulpit date from the Baroque period. Their two twisted columns are decorated with vine leaves and ears of grain—a specific detail that reveals the design of these furnishings.

The bells of the Gortz church also tell us about when they were made: Christian Heintze cast one bell in 1718 and Daniel Heintze cast the other in 1740, both in Berlin. Together with the Late Gothic building and Baroque elements, they offer a multifaceted view of the church, with parts dating from different periods.

Milling traditions in Ketzür

The milling season at the Ketzür post mill runs from Easter Monday to mid-October. Tours led by the millers are listed for Sundays from 2 to 6 p.m. If you are interested in the mill, you can take this period into account when planning your trip. The tour offers a distinct connection to cultural history, alongside the churches and circular hiking trail.
