Monastery History and Events

Concerts and film evenings are held regularly at Kloster Stift zum Heiligengrabe, and visitors are welcome. If you are planning a trip specifically for an event, check the dates in advance. This lets you plan your visit to the monastery around its events programme.

A permanent exhibition on the history of the monastery and the later convent of Heiligengrabe is on display in the abbey’s east wing. The exhibition brings together two historical chapters in one place. Along with concerts and film evenings, it offers a way to explore the monastery’s history that does not depend solely on individual event dates.

Village History in Blumenthal

The village church in Blumenthal is a rectangular, hall-style fieldstone building dating from the 16th century. Fieldstone refers to the building material, while hall-style describes the form of the building; the date places it in its historical context. The local history room in Blumenthal displays artefacts from the village’s past, complementing this look at its architecture with local history.

The wooden Blumenthal observation tower is 44.65 metres high and has 187 steps. It is currently temporarily closed due to age-related wear. Take the closure into account when planning your visits.

Cycling and Getting Around

Pedestrians and cyclists can use a new, safe path between Heiligengrabe railway station and Kloster Stift zum Heiligengrabe. It runs parallel to Blesendorfer Straße and passes several trees. The district reported that construction was completed on 25 October 2023.

The 108-kilometre Bishop’s Tour passes through Heiligengrabe and Wittstock, among other places, and invites you on a journey through the Prignitz landscape and back to the Middle Ages. The entire Bishop’s Tour follows developed, signposted cycling paths. Regional transport links to Berlin and Hamburg are also useful to know about when getting your bearings in Heiligengrabe and Wittstock. The municipality is also home to the Schaugarten Arche school farm, located on the Bishop’s Tour cycle route.

The Elbe-Müritz Circular Route, Historic Town Centres 3 and the Tour Brandenburg are also listed as long-distance cycling routes for the municipality of Heiligengrabe. This adds other routes to the Bishop’s Tour when planning your trip. Ostprignitz-Ruppin as a Wider Travel Destination

Ostprignitz-Ruppin is a rural region of open spaces and tranquillity, green beech and pine forests, meadows, shady tree-lined avenues, and numerous lakes and rivers. The Ruppiner Seenland is one of the district’s travel regions.

The Kyritz-Ruppiner Heath covers 12,000 hectares in Ostprignitz-Ruppin and has been part of Stechlin-Ruppiner Land Nature Park since 2021. It is one of Europe’s largest continuous heathland areas with Calluna heath. The heath provides a habitat for numerous protected and endangered animal species, including more than 70 bird species and, since 2008, wolves. Electric-assist fat bikes make it possible to explore the area on unpaved, often sandy paths, allowing visitors to experience its flora and fauna with care. The nature park lies partly within Ostprignitz-Ruppin and offers opportunities for hiking and cycling.
