After the Thirty Years’ War, the castle had fallen into complete disrepair. Around 1700, a half-timbered palace was built on its foundations. In this way, the castle complex became a palace, with a building history spanning several centuries.

Under Hans Ehrenreich von Bornstedt, the palace was substantially remodelled in 1778 and later partially plastered. Another striking change followed in 1928: the building was extensively altered and given a central avant-corps, a projecting section in the middle of the façade. The sequence of an earlier castle, half-timbered building and later alterations makes Hohennauen interesting for anyone who enjoys historic townscapes and architecture.

Fortified Tower and Historic Furnishings in the Village Church

The village church in Hohennauen also tells a story of architectural history. Its brick western tower dates back to a Romanesque predecessor built in the mid-13th century. As a fortified tower, it features loopholes. The church tower thus links an early building phase with a clearly recognisable defensive feature.

The church’s furnishings include the lavish sandstone sarcophagus of Katharina Hedwig von der Hagen. It was made around 1769 and stands beneath the patron’s gallery; coats of arms and inscriptions adorn the tomb. Several 18th-century paintings are also part of the church interior. Together, these details offer a different perspective from the palace’s eventful history: here, the focus is on a single tomb and the furnishings of a church interior.

Lakeside Loop and Bathing Area in Hohennauen

The Hohennauener-Ferchesarer See lakeside loop is 23.2 kilometres long and starts and ends at the village green in the Hohennauen district. From the village, the route crosses the canal bridge. It is marked with a red bar on a white background and the words “Seerundweg” (lakeside loop). The Havelland Cycle Route crosses the Havelländisches Luch via Nauen, Ribbeck and Rathenow to the Westhavelland Nature and Star Park. It is mostly paved, flat and pleasant to ride. At the Westhavelland Nature Park Centre, visitors of all ages can explore topics including the lowland landscape, the renaturation of the Lower Havel, Germany’s last great bustards and Germany’s first Star Park. Thus, alongside local history, the Havelland offers nature watching, cycling and regional learning opportunities.
