Plant Knowledge and Special Gardens

The Herzberg Botanical Garden was established in the early 20th century as a school and display garden for botanical education. Today, it provides information about plants, habitats, biodiversity, climate change and sustainable garden design. Its programmes are aimed at children, young people, adults and older people. Tours and group activities should be arranged in advance.

The garden also includes a historic rock garden. Its original concept featured plants from alpine and drought-tolerant plant communities. This brings together a historic design concept and today’s educational programmes about plants and habitats—two different points of interest for anyone interested in gardens.

Architecture and City History

St. Mary’s Church is a three-aisled Late Gothic hall church. The present structure of Grochwitz Castle dates predominantly from the 19th century.

Villa Marx also has its own historical significance. Carl Marx is believed to have commissioned an Art Nouveau villa with gardens near the Niederlausitz railway station, opposite the city park, between 1906 and 1907. In the garden, a pond at the foot of the pavilion is bordered by limestone terraces, with a sunken garden nearby.

The park at Grochwitz Castle is also an important habitat for amphibians. Its marginal habitats include, in particular, ponds where an unusually wide variety of amphibian species can be found. The park’s ecological importance thus adds another perspective to the castle’s architectural history.

Stars, Animals and Activities

The Zeiss Planetarium in Herzberg offers a varied programme for children and adults all year round. Another place to explore astronomy is the observatory atop the water tower, 37 metres above the ground. Those interested in the night sky will therefore find two different points of interest here: a planetarium programme and an elevated observatory.

A range of activity and experience modules can be booked at ElsterPark throughout the year for groups, school classes, children’s birthday parties and team-building events. Canoes, kayaks, trekking bikes, e-bikes and wheelchair-accessible bicycles are also available to rent. The rental options and bookable group modules address different planning needs: would you like to book an activity for a group, or are you interested in one of the listed rental items?

Herzberg Animal Park is set in a park-like landscape with mature trees and several ponds. The animals living there include, among others, white-handed gibbons, camels and mouflons. As animal populations may change, it is advisable to check which animals are currently there before your visit.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

When looking for a holiday apartment in Herzberg (Elster), these different areas of interest can help you plan your stay: plant education and garden history, architecture, the planetarium and observatory, animal watching or activities at ElsterPark. This lets you decide first which themes you’d like your stay to focus on, rather than combining every activity into a single itinerary. For your specific plans, check the planetarium schedule and arrange tours or group activities at the Botanical Garden in advance.
