The mill and the museum thus offer different ways to explore history: one is a building with an oven and tours by arrangement; the other is a collection that brings the former school day to life through its objects and images.

Lakes, Cycling Routes and Places in the Municipality

If you would like to focus more on nature and outdoor activities during your stay, the municipality offers other options. Brandiser See was developed into a bathing lake in 2003. In Brandis, you can also connect another local destination with the theme of water. In Bernsdorf, a natural lake was created through gravel extraction; the “Island of Recreation” on the lake is right beside a new cycling route. Schönewalde’s cycle routes also take you to Fläming Skate.

In Hohenkuhnsdorf stands an 800-year-old, listed small-leaved lime tree with a trunk circumference of 6.40 metres. Ahlsdorf Palace Park offers a different view of the municipality: it covers 15 hectares and contains rare trees and shrubs. On its southern side is the tomb of the Georg von Siemens family, restored in 1994/95. The palace itself is privately owned. Visitor access to the park is indicated; check the current access arrangements before your visit.

Grassau is also part of the municipality of Schönewalde, although it is not in the main settlement area. Bread and cakes are baked in the traditional oven there for special occasions such as village festivals, as well as for family celebrations on request. If you would like to include this in your plans, arrange it in advance. Together with the wood-fired oven at the mill, Grassau shows that the baking tradition in Schönewalde is tied to specific places and occasions.

Beyond Schönewalde, the wider Elbe-Elster destination has its own attractions. The Louise briquette factory in Domsdorf is Europe’s oldest surviving briquette factory. Plessa Power Station is one of Europe’s oldest lignite-fired power stations and has retained its original structure; visitors can see authentic power station technology from the 1920s there. Since January 2015, four major museums in the Elbe-Elster district have formed a joint museum network. They include the Mühlberg 1547 Museum, which focuses on the meeting of the armies in 1547 and its significance for the course of the Reformation, and bears the European Heritage Label. These regional examples complement the local themes of mills, museums and nature, but are separate destinations within the wider Elbe-Elster destination.
