Roman traces and local history
The Limes Trail around Pfofeld leads to Roman traces in the municipal districts of Pfofeld and Theilenhofen. Highlights include the Roman bath near Theilenhofen and a partial reconstruction of a Limes watchtower near Rittern. An information board at the partially reconstructed Roman bath near Theilenhofen provides details about the monuments; a further 13 information boards stand along the Limes-Roman Bath circular trail.
St Michael’s Church in Pfofeld tells another chapter of local history. It was built from sandstone around 1130. The chancel and nave contain Gothic frescoes dating from the 15th century, which were only uncovered again after the Second World War. The building thus brings together the early stone church and the later wall paintings, each representing a different historical layer.
The boundary procession is also part of Pfofeld’s tradition: every twelve years, the procession follows the boundaries of the village fields. Nature, cycling and water
Numerous fruit trees and blackthorn hedges line the path at Langlauer Buck, in a nature reserve with nutrient-poor grassland. The nature-focused Langlauer Buck adventure playground has a hedge tunnel, a high seesaw, a hillside slide and a cloud swing, all available to use. As the facilities may change, briefly check which pieces of equipment are currently available before your visit.
A cycle path connects Pfofeld and Langlau and is passable as far as Dornhausen. A tunnel at the Rehenbühl roundabout in the municipality of Pfofeld also allows you to cross State Road 2222 safely. This gives you both a specific cycle route and a safe place to cross the state road.
The Langlau lakeside centre in the municipality of Pfofeld has a wide sandy beach with a green sunbathing lawn and a shallow entry into the water; the beach is freely accessible. Popular activities at the lake include swimming, sailing, windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, pedal boating and minigolf. The beach and water sports offer a different focus from the Roman sites and local history.

Roman heritage in Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen

In Weißenburg, the Roman Museum displays Germany’s largest Roman treasure hoard and houses the Central Bavarian Limes Information Centre. These regional sites add the broader context of the district to the Roman traces in Pfofeld.
