Haundorf: Circular Routes, Kneipp Facility and Franconian Countryside
Accommodation in Haundorf
Haundorf offers a variety of ways to spend your time: the Haundorf Trail is ideal for a short evening stroll, the municipality’s Kneipp facility invites you to enjoy Kneipp water therapy with spring water and fitness equipment, and there are cycling routes in Haundorf and the surrounding area. The wider destination of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen offers further opportunities to explore culture and water.
Circular Routes and Trails in the Surrounding Area
The Haundorf Trail is 3.42 kilometres long, is considered the municipality’s shortest circular route, and is ideal for a short evening stroll. It starts at the Haundorf pond and follows a forest path towards Haundorf. On the edge of the village, it offers views across fields and meadows. Its circular route and stated purpose as an evening stroll give you clear guidance when planning a short walk into your day.
The Brunnen-Quellen-Weiherweg trail offers a different kind of outing. It starts at the edge of Haundorf, opposite the cemetery, in the direction of Haundorf pond. The trail follows the pond and the edge of the forest to Geislohe, as far as Federal Highway 466. This means you can choose between a short loop and a route with a specific direction and destination.
Cycling and Kneipp Therapy
There are almost 100 kilometres of surfaced and signposted cycling routes in Haundorf and the surrounding area. These routes run for many kilometres through forests and Franconian landscapes on well-maintained paths. This is a different scale from the Haundorf circular route: cycling opens up a wider regional network, while the circular route is described as a short evening stroll.
The municipality’s Kneipp facility also offers something different. With spring water and a range of fitness equipment, it invites you to enjoy Kneipp water therapy. When looking for a holiday apartment, the mix of activities you want may be the deciding factor: would you like your stay to focus mainly on walking and cycling, or is Kneipp therapy one of the local options that interests you?
Church History in the Municipality of Haundorf
The municipality of Haundorf includes the village of Obererlbach, home to St. Valentine’s Church. Built in 1486, it is made of red sandstone from the surrounding quarries. Three bells hang in the church tower; the oldest is more than 500 years old and bears the inscription of the Angelic Salutation. In 1962, the neo-Gothic high altar was replaced by a Gothic winged altarpiece depicting the Fourteen Holy Helpers. The church’s construction date, building material, bells and altar give it a distinctive historical character within the municipality.
Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen: Roman History, Water and Routes
The wider destination of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen expands the cultural options with its Roman heritage. The Limes runs for around 40 kilometres across the district and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site there since 2005. In Weißenburg, the Roman Museum displays Germany’s largest Roman treasure hoard and houses the Central Bavarian Limes Information Centre. The city’s Roman heritage also includes the Roman Baths; the Biriciana fort has been partially reconstructed. If you would like to combine history with a hiking route, you can follow the Via Biriciana: the Weißenburg hiking trail runs along old Roman roads to the Limes.
The Hohenzollern fortress of Wülzburg, above Weißenburg, offers another historical perspective. It stands on the highest hilltop of the southern Franconian Jura, at an elevation of 630 metres, and is an impressive example of Renaissance fortress architecture in Germany. Weather permitting, guided tours are offered from May to October; check current dates if you are planning a tour.
Water and longer routes also shape the wider destination. Lake Altmühlsee lies northwest of Gunzenhausen and is ideal for swimming, sailing and surfing. Water sports are generally possible on the district’s lakes; on Lake Igelsbachsee, they are permitted only as part of common use. For longer tours, the 200-kilometre Altmühltal Panorama Trail follows the Altmühl from Gunzenhausen to Kelheim through Altmühltal Nature Park. The Altmühltal Cycle Route connects the same places over around 160 kilometres through the nature park. This gives you a choice of different activities across the wider region: hiking, cycling, water or culture.
