Waginger See and trails in town

When temperatures are suitable, you can go ice skating on Waginger See against a backdrop of the Alps. Together with the opportunities for water sports, the lake offers a variety of reasons to include it in your travel plans. Ice skating is, of course, dependent on suitable temperatures.

The Luise Rinser Trail begins at the town hall square in Kirchanschöring and is about 11.2 kilometres long. Its named starting point and approximate length give you two concrete reference points when planning your walk. A detailed cycling and hiking map is available from the Kirchanschöring Tourist Information Office. Ask there about current availability if you would like to use the map for your planning.

Rural culture in the surrounding area

At the Rupertiwinkel Farm Museum in Hof, farming equipment and traditional crafts are demonstrated. You can also visit the tithe barn and a collection of vintage tractors. A grain store, a flax-breaking bath, a baking oven, and agricultural and craft tools are also on display. The centrepiece of the museum is a historic steam engine. Before visiting, it is advisable to check the seasonal opening hours and group arrangements.

Another cultural destination nearby is Tittmoning Castle, which is open to visitors. Alongside the demonstrations and collections at the farm museum, a visit to the castle is another possible reason for a trip.

Traunstein: landscapes and culture in the district

The wider destination of Traunstein includes Chiemsee and Waginger See within the district. The Chiemgau Alps have more than 170 alpine pastures and peaks rising to 2,000 metres. The Seeoner Seen are listed as a nature reserve in Traunstein district; Waginger See and Tachinger See are listed as a landscape conservation area. Officially designated protected areas in the district help preserve biodiversity, safeguard rare habitats and protect the natural and cultural landscape.

Traunstein also offers its own cultural perspective. The surviving saltworks houses and the saltworks chapel provide insight into the city’s significant salt history; the saltworks chapel is the largest chapel in Germany. The historic city walk passes the Kulturforum Klosterkirche and then continues to the saltworks chapel, the saltworks houses and the Salinenpark, established in 2019. The brewery museum near Jacklturm belongs to Hofbräuhaus Traunstein. The local history museum houses a city and toy museum, with exhibits on civic culture, sacred art and the history of the saltworks.
