At the foot of Kreuzberg, Bischofsheim i.d. Rhön combines a distinctive town center with an extensive network of hiking and mountain biking routes. It is also home to woodcarving, historic buildings, and nearby Osterburg. When planning your vacation, the key question is which experiences you would like to focus on: routes through the town, longer hikes, or mountain biking tours.

Hiking trails between the town center and the Rhön

The trail network in the Bischofsheim area includes the Hochrhöner premium hiking trail and nearly 30 certified extra tours. There are 170 kilometers of marked trails in total. One specific option is the Bischofsheim–Osterburg–Kreuzberg route: it has a steep climb, is shaded, and takes about two and a half hours. This information can help you fit the hike into your day and coordinate it with other plans.

There is another way to explore Bischofsheim on foot. The Old Town Circular Walk & Wood Sculpture Trail leads to secluded corners, including along the historic town wall. The town center is laid out as a so-called “Franconian circular village”; the late Romanesque Zent Tower, dating from the 13th century, is considered a landmark. On a walk, you can take in the town’s layout, the town wall, and a distinctive historic building, rather than focusing on a steep route.

History and woodcarving

At the Rentamt, a multimedia exhibition presents hundreds of archaeological finds illustrating life in and around Osterburg. The connection to the castle gives the finds a tangible historical context. Another special feature of the town is Germany’s oldest woodcarving school. Together with the Wood Sculpture Trail, it makes woodcarving a subject in its own right during your stay, alongside hiking and cycling tours.

Osterburg near Bischofsheim is a castle ruin in a panoramic setting at an elevation of 700 meters, in the heart of the Rhön UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Kreuzberg above Bischofsheim is a pilgrimage site with a centuries-old tradition and is known as the “Holy Mountain of the Franks.” The trails between Bischofsheim, Osterburg, and Kreuzberg give hiking a historical and scenic context, while the Zent Tower, town wall, and circular village layout define the town center.

Mountain biking and cycling

If you prefer mountain biking, the Bischofsheim an der Rhön Mountain Bike Center offers suggested tours ranging from easy beginner routes to intermediate trails and challenging rides over the Rhön’s highest peaks. The signposted mountain biking routes around Bischofsheim connect destinations including the Wasserkuppe and Kreuzberg. Nearby, you will also find the Kreuzberg Flow Trail: it is about 2 kilometers long, with around 50 performance features and approximately 180 meters of elevation change. These different types of tours give you specific points of reference when choosing accommodation based on the activities you have planned.

For a cycling trip away from the mountain biking routes, the Brendtal Cycle Path runs from Bischofsheim to Bad Neustadt. This gives you several cycling options: suggested tours at different difficulty levels, signposted routes around Bischofsheim, and a connection to Bad Neustadt. Which one suits your vacation depends on whether you want to include a mountain biking tour or the Brendtal Cycle Path in your plans.

Local character and other town pages

The Kreuzberg monastery beer, brewed locally since 1731, is also part of the area’s distinctive character. Along with the pilgrimage tradition, woodcarving, and historic traces in the town center, it complements Bischofsheim’s active pursuits with a regional tradition.
