Pilgrimage, Remembrance and Culture
The Chapel of Grace in Altötting was replicated on Fürstenstein’s Schlossberg Hill in 1629. During the Thirty Years’ War, the replica was intended to spare pilgrims the dangerous journey to Altötting. The chapel was therefore built for a specific purpose: to make it possible to venerate the miraculous image in Fürstenstein as well. To this day, numerous pilgrims come here each year to venerate the miraculous image and ask for help and support.
Another cultural landmark is in the district of Nammering, where a memorial, a commemorative stone and the “Track of Remembrance” recall the victims. The municipality of Fürstenstein also has a Kneipp pool beside the path at Kollnbergmühlweiher. Different themes thus come together: pilgrimage on Schlossberg Hill, remembrance in Nammering and a Kneipp pool along a path in the municipality.
Circular Trails of Different Lengths
The Oheweg is a quiet, nature-oriented circular hiking trail around Fürstenstein. The 7.5-kilometre route passes through forests and open meadows, as well as along the Kleine Ohe stream. At 11 kilometres, the Steinbruchweg is the longer of the two routes described here. It leads through the cultivated landscape around Fürstenstein and Nammering.
The route lengths give you a concrete basis for comparison as you plan: the Oheweg is the shorter circuit, while the Steinbruchweg offers a longer hike. The Haus am Strom Nature Experience Centre is another place to discover the region’s natural environment. It lies in the narrow Bavarian-Austrian section of the Danube valley below Untergriesbach. The Passau region is shaped by rivers, forests and thermal baths; well-known thermal springs are located in Bad Füssing and Bad Griesbach. These regional highlights differ from Fürstenstein’s local character and broaden the view of the wider destination.
The Passau region also offers other options for cultural and active days out. The Danube Cycle Path runs through the region and received a 4-star rating following an assessment by the German Cyclists’ Association. As certifications can change, it is best to check the current status before planning. The Granite Adventure Hiking Trail runs around Hauzenberg, while the Smuggler’s Trail is in the Danube Pearls area.
The Ortenburg Castle Culture programme is an event series organised by the Friends of Ortenburg Castle.
