When choosing where to stay, it is worth distinguishing between the memorial sites, activities at the Happurg reservoir and wider excursions in the Nürnberger Land.
Memorial Site and Clear Boundaries
The Happurg documentation site is an observation platform with information displays. The Hersbruck/Happurg documentation site commemorates the former subcamp of Flossenbürg concentration camp. One of the two installations is located at the former site of forced labor in Happurg. The remembrance of this historic site is a distinct cultural focus, separate from opportunities for outdoor activities.
An important restriction applies at the Houbirg: the unfinished tunnel complex in the Dogger rock is now at serious risk of collapse and is not accessible. Do not plan to enter the tunnel complex. This makes a clear distinction between visiting the documentation site and the inaccessible tunnels.
The Reservoir and Nearby Trails
The Happurg reservoir is located near Happurg. It is not an officially designated bathing lake, and motorboats are not permitted there. After dry spells, the reservoir is not always completely filled and may have a lower water level. The local sailing club's grounds are on the western shore.
A large parking lot is located at the Happurg reservoir, just past the substation on state road ST 2236. As parking conditions may change, check the current situation before setting out. There are also designated Nordic walking routes by the reservoir; check the condition and route of the trails before you go.
A marked hiking trail network runs through the landscapes of the Franconian Alb, including to the 612-meter-high Arzberg, which has an observation tower. Arzberg is four kilometers to the west. Trail markers and current trail conditions are practical points of reference when planning a hike. The Happurger Stausee-Express leisure bus route runs from Happurg via Houbirg, Arzlohe, Mittelburg and Waizenfeld to Hartmannshof. It provides another named route option; no specific travel times are given.
Other Perspectives in the Nürnberger Land
The Nürnberger Land can also be considered as a broader destination in its own right. More than 3,000 kilometers of well-marked hiking trails and well-developed cycling routes, with varying levels of difficulty, run through the Nürnberger Land. One example of a more fully described hiking route is “Hohenstein (634 m) – SevenSummits” in Kirchensittenbach: it is 10.1 kilometers long, with 406 meters of ascent and 397 meters of descent. The distance and elevation figures provide concrete points of comparison without implying an assessment of other trails.
Another regional route, “Hochberg (619 m) – SevenSummits,” runs through the forests around Pommelsbrunn; its highlight is the “Acropolis of the Celts” on Hochberg. Pommelsbrunn is also home to Wengleinpark, a nature reserve founded by Carl Wenglein in 1930. The Nürnberger Land is part of the Franconian Switzerland–Franconian Jura Nature Park. Other landscape features include the steep, partly undercut walls of the Bitterbach Gorge in Lauf an der Pegnitz, rocks covered with mosses and ferns, deep crevices and holes, and small waterfalls. The Franconian Dune Trail leads through sandstone gorges, sand dunes and shady forests.
The region also has distinctive destinations for culture and recreation. The German Shepherds’ Museum in Hersbruck displays clothing, equipment and handicrafts made by shepherds from around the world. The Fackelmann Therme Hersbruck is accessible to people with disabilities: lifts connect the foyer to the thermal baths, and from there to the sports and leisure pool and sauna park. The spa offers relaxation in state-recognized therapeutic water and a sauna area with seven saunas. Check current operating information before your visit.
The Pegnitz River and the lakes in the Nürnberger Land offer opportunities for water sports in the region. This general overview does not change the specific rules at the Happurg reservoir: it is not an officially designated bathing lake, and motorboats are not permitted there.
