Discover architectural and local history
The Wagnerhaus on Hubertusplatz in Deisenhofen is a special place for culture enthusiasts. Built in the 18th century, the building is a typical single-ridge farmstead of the Upper Bavarian Alpine foothills, with a shallow-pitched gabled roof. The living quarters, stable and barn are all under one roof. The Wagnerhaus is the last surviving farmhouse in Oberhaching; its design illustrates the traditional practice of combining different functions in one building. The supporting association takes visitors through the historic rooms and regularly organises cultural events and themed evenings.
You can also explore the town’s history on your own: the free OHA app offers self-guided tours through the municipality’s history. The “Oberhaching Time Travel” augmented reality app offers another way to explore digitally. Its tours overlay historical views onto the camera image on a smartphone or tablet at buildings, squares and streets around the town. If you prefer to connect history with a specific building, you can complement these activities with a visit to the Wagnerhaus as a cultural attraction in its own right.
Another prominent landmark is the tower of St. Stephen’s Parish Church. The Stephaniritt takes place in Deisenhofen every year on 26 December: the procession with horses goes around St. Stephen’s Church, followed by a blessing of the horses. Its fixed date and programme make this custom a distinctive cultural highlight in the annual calendar.
Valley landscape and cycle paths
The Hachinger Valley is designated as a landscape conservation area in the municipalities of Oberhaching and Taufkirchen. The landscape includes the Gleißental valley and its continuation, the Hachinger Bach valley. Together, they form a landscape incision about 25 metres deep, created by meltwater flowing from the Isar Glacier. This geological history gives the landscape a tangible dimension: the valley is not just a name on a map, but an incision carved by meltwater.
For a cycling holiday, the main cycle route from Sauerlach via Deisenhofen to Geiselgasteig offers another point of reference. It is almost flat, largely free of intersections and usable year-round. The route passes through the Deisenhofen Forest to Deisenhofen S-Bahn station and continues to the Munich city boundary. If you enjoy spending time on your bike, these features of the route may factor into your choice of destination.
Swimming and getting here
The Furth natural swimming pool offers several ways to enjoy the water: it has a 50-metre swimming pool, a non-swimmer pool, a diving area with a rock diving platform, a water trampoline and a water slide. The water comes from a spring; no chemical additives are used, and it is treated entirely by biological means. When planning your holiday, you can consider whether swimming, alongside cultural and landscape experiences, fits what you have in mind.
Since 2023, Deisenhofen station has had a mobility hub. It connects buses, trains, cycling and car-sharing services, making it easier to switch from the car. Your preferred way of travelling may therefore also play a part in choosing a holiday apartment: consider whether you will mainly visit the cycling and cultural attractions mentioned here, or combine different modes of transport during your stay. These suggested priorities can help you choose Oberhaching based on your travel group’s interests, without requiring you to plan any particular day of your holiday.
