Chapel and cycle route in Haimhausen

Construction of Bründl Chapel began in 1734. Nearby, the Church of the Assumption of Mary in Inhausen offers another example of sacred architecture: its exterior is characterised by Late Gothic features, while its interior has a uniform Late Baroque design. The contrast between the exterior and interior gives the church in Inhausen its own architectural character, while Bründl Chapel is distinguished by its stone construction and dedication to the Virgin Mary.

The 23-kilometre “Mühlensee Family Tour” cycle route starts and ends in Haimhausen. The routes are not signposted; they were compiled in 2020, and conditions may have changed. Cultural and landscape experiences in the wider Dachau destination

Lake Karlsfeld is situated directly beside the built-up area of northern Karlsfeld, covers 58.2 hectares and is in the district of Dachau. It is used year-round for walking, jogging, cycling and recreation. A different kind of outing is the approximately 2.5-kilometre “Lifeline Maisach” trail: it runs along the Maisach River and is accessible to people with disabilities from Bergkirchen or Günding. The wider Dachau destination therefore offers a range of landscape experiences, from lakeside paths to riverside trails.

At Petersberg near Erdweg stands a Romanesque basilica built in 1104 and preserved to this day. The sculpture trail at Petersberg winds through Petersberg Forest, is 200 metres long and features ten works of art at eight stops. The middle route of the “Seven Monasteries Cycle Route” leads to Altomünster and Petersberg. Altomünster was home to a Bridgettine monastery for centuries.

The permanent exhibition at the Altomünster Museum explores the history of the Bridgettine Order in Europe and its founder, Saint Bridget of Sweden, including through the example of the now-closed Altomünster monastery, which had existed for 500 years. The Dachau District Museum covers the cultural history of the town and district of Dachau across three floors. Its exhibition themes include settlement patterns, the history of the town, guilds and market rights, crafts and trade, everyday life, festive traditions and popular religious culture. The Dachau Picture Gallery’s permanent collection features landscape and genre paintings from the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The town of Dachau also combines culture and landscape: its historic old town is protected as an architectural ensemble and invites visitors to stroll and linger. Wittelsbach Castle was once a popular summer residence of the Wittelsbach family. The climb up to the castle offers views across the Munich Gravel Plain, the Bavarian capital of Munich and as far as the Alps. Guided tours take place regularly; current dates are announced in due course. Check the dates before your visit. In the Amper floodplains, with patience and a little luck, you can spot the feeding marks of the beaver, which has returned to the area.
