Baierbrunn combines geological traces on the edge of the Isar Valley with local and religious history. Ice Age gravel deposits, historical information boards, a medieval castle site and the Hungarian Cross each offer a different perspective. This makes it possible to explore the town from several angles rather than focusing your stay on a single theme. Two S-Bahn stations are also relevant for your journey: one in Baierbrunn and one in Buchenhain. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can consider your interests in the landscape and culture alongside your travel plans.

Geology on the Edge of the Isar Valley

East of Buchenhain, at the Baierbrunn climbing garden on the edge of the Isar Valley, at least three superimposed Ice Age gravel deposits are exposed. They differ in their degree of weathering and consolidation and are interpreted as meltwater gravels from different Ice Ages. Two perspectives complement each other here: weathering and consolidation describe the condition of the deposits, while their attribution to different Ice Ages describes their formation. Those interested in the history of the Earth will find a concrete geological topic here, distinct from the local history boards and church heritage. Following the rockfall at the end of May 2023, the Baierbrunn climbing garden and access to the geotope were closed; the municipality of Baierbrunn issued a prohibition on entering the area. Check the municipality’s latest notices before visiting.

Local History, Castle Site and Religious History

The local history trail established by the Baierbrunn local history association was supplemented with the information board “Die Schwemm.” Another local history board, “Beim Schmied,” was installed in January 2023 next to the display case of the Baierbrunn Heritage Preservation Association. The names refer to different things: Die Schwemm supplements the trail, while Beim Schmied is the name of the board installed beside the display case in January 2023. This makes it easy to distinguish between the two local history topics.

Baierbrunn Castle is a castle site dating from the High and Late Middle Ages. The term “castle site” refers to the location of a former castle; its historical period ranges from the High to the Late Middle Ages. This gives it a distinct historical focus alongside the local history boards: here, the castle site takes center stage, while the boards identify specific local topics.

The Hungarian Cross in the parish church of St. Peter and Paul is another distinct point of interest. It is considered evidence of religions existing alongside and in coexistence with one another. Its significance and interpretation are religious, whereas the castle site is dated to the High and Late Middle Ages.

Public sculptures are located around the Wort&Bild publishing house in Baierbrunn. They add art in public spaces to the historical and religious points of interest, offering another thematic focus.

Getting to Baierbrunn and Holiday Apartments

The former Isartalbahn station in Baierbrunn and the stop in Buchenhain are stations on the S7 S-Bahn line. Check the latest connections before your journey. The S7 is a practical factor in planning your trip, while local history and cultural topics offer a different focus. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can weigh up both: How would you like to get there, and which topics would you like to shape your stay?
