Stubenberg: Gothic Art, the Marterl Trail and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Stubenberg
Stubenberg combines impressive church art with opportunities for hiking, cycling and climbing. The late Gothic parish and pilgrimage church of St. George and St. Urban stands prominently atop a hill overlooking the town. There are also two routes of different lengths and a climbing experience near Kirn. You can tailor your stay to whether you would like to discover historic architecture or prefer to spend time outdoors.
Church Art and History in Stubenberg
The parish and pilgrimage church of St. George and St. Urban is closely connected historically with Stubenberg Castle. Its hilltop location makes it a prominent feature of the townscape. Frescoes by Carl Johann Gasteiger can be found in the choir and nave. Another specific detail of the church’s furnishings is the red marble tomb for Wolfgang Paumgartner, dated 1512.
The history of the site is also connected with the church: it stands on the site of a former castle. Stubenberg Castle burned down in 1743. Anyone interested in architectural history will find several distinct points of interest here: the late Gothic architecture, the frescoes and the dated tomb, as well as the former castle site and the history of the castle.
On Foot, by Bike or Over the Rocks
Circular hiking trail 10, the Marterl Trail, starts at Gasthaus Hofmark in Stubenberg and is about 7 km long. Along the way, it passes the Welsches Marterl and the Meindl Chapel, before returning to Stubenberg. These named stops give the route a cultural dimension in addition to the walk itself. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
For cycling, the Elexenau Loop is another option: this cycling route is about 14 km long and runs through the Stubenberg hills. At the Felsenlabyrinth near Kirn, climbing enthusiasts can make their way up over the rocks. These are different ways to experience the area: a hike with named stops, a loop through the hills or climbing over rocks. The distances of about 7 and about 14 km can help you choose a trip, but they describe different activities.
When searching for a holiday apartment, it may help to first decide what you would like to focus on during your stay: church art and history, hiking, cycling or climbing. This lets you choose based on the experiences that interest you most, without treating the different activities as a single route.
