Bischofsreuth: Forest Strip Farms, Trails and Fairy-Tale Forest
Accommodation in Bischofsreuth
Bischofsreuth offers a variety of themes for your vacation days: historic trade routes, a landscape of forest strip farms, nature trails and the Fairy-Tale Forest. The Golden Trail leads toward Bohemia and explores the history of medieval trade. The Flursteig focuses on mountain meadows, forest paths and traditional agriculture. There are also fairy tales for children and an annual Rogation procession at St. Nepomuk Chapel. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider whether cultural history, landscape or shared discoveries for children will be a particular focus of your vacation.
Discover the Trade Route and Mountain Meadows
The Golden Trail nature experience trail begins in Bischofsreut and follows a medieval trade route toward Bohemia. It traces the paths once taken by pack carriers and their horses. The history of trade is at the heart of this trail: its direction and historic character are part of the story, as are the people and animals associated with the pack-trading tradition.
The Flursteig nature experience trail leads through mountain meadows and forest paths around Bischofsreut. It brings traditional, regionally typical upland farming vividly to life. One of the region’s last juniper heaths, home to rare animal and plant species, is among its themes, as are small historic field plots. Other features include an irrigated meadow with a meadow channel and old, now-rare domestic animal breeds. The Flursteig thus connects themes of landscape and agriculture, while the Golden Trail focuses above all on the historic trade route.
Forest Strip Farms as Part of the Cultural Landscape
In the Bischofsreut area, the basic layout of some forest strip-farm villages, with their forest strip fields, has been preserved. Around 780 hectares of Bischofsreut’s forest strip farms were designated as part of the Europe-wide Natura 2000 network of protected areas. The landscape can therefore be viewed both as a habitat and in terms of its historic use. Interactive museum trails lead to the highlights of Bischofsreut’s forest strip farms.
The irrigated meadow on the Flursteig also shows how agriculture and landscape come together in these themes: the meadow channel is one of the trail’s stops, alongside historic field plots and now-rare domestic animal breeds. The juniper heath, in turn, connects the nature trail with the theme of rare animal and plant species. These different focuses can help you decide whether you are more interested in cultural landscapes, agriculture or nature.
The Fairy-Tale Forest and Local Traditions
The Bischofsreut Fairy-Tale Forest presents twelve traditional folk tales for children. The facilities described include a large wooden train that children can climb into, a climbing house, picnic areas, barbecue spots and benches made from roots. The fairy tales and play facilities offer a different focus from the nature experience trails and give families another theme to enjoy together on vacation.
Every year in May, a Rogation procession takes place at St. Nepomuk Chapel, followed by an open-air church service. This annual tradition adds a religious custom to the nature and cultural landscape themes.
A pedestrian crossing for walkers, cyclists and skiers was opened in 1996 at the old bridge over the Harlandbach stream.
More Destinations in the Larger Haidmühle Destination
Beyond Bischofsreuth, the larger destination of Haidmühle offers more activities. International sled dog races are held there every year; Haidmühle is also a European Championship venue for purebred sled dogs. Dates vary from one edition to another. The Haidmühle Cultural Landscape Museum presents the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage outdoors, in their original locations. Five museum trails connect the stops.
In the municipality of Haidmühle, the circular hike to Schnellenzipf near Bischofsreut is over seven kilometers long, has an elevation gain of 130 meters and takes about two hours. The approximate duration, distance and elevation gain together provide a practical guide for planning your day. The LBV nature reserve at Schnellenzipf contains remnants of raised bog, wet meadows and mountain hay meadows.
Another option in the larger destination is the five-kilometer Adalbert Stifter cross-country ski trail. It starts in Haidmühle or Frauenberg and follows a former railway line as a flat, very easy trail. Since winter conditions affect whether it can be operated, you should check current conditions before setting out. This makes it possible to consider the local nature trails and the additional destinations in Haidmühle in terms of their different themes and planning details.
