International sled dog races are held in the village every year; Haidmühle is also a European Championship venue for purebred sled dogs. The dates of individual races vary. Winter dates and seasonal activities
The 5 km Adalbert Stifter cross-country ski trail starts in Haidmühle or Frauenberg and follows a former railway line along a flat, very easy route. Check the current winter conditions before setting out. In the municipality of Haidmühle, sledding hills offer opportunities for sledding when seasonal snow conditions are suitable. In summer, the municipality has more than 30 km of hiking trails; hiking is in season there all year round. The Kreuzbachsee in the municipality of Haidmühle is also a popular place for swimming in summer.
Seven Kneipp facilities fed by streams are available in the districts of Haidmühle-Ludwigsreut, Frauenberg, Auersbergsreut, Bischofsreut and Schwarzenthal. There is also a trekking site at the Jogl Kneipp facility, directly on the Goldsteig trail and the Mirasatbach stream. Access to the site requires a booking. Trails with different themes
The Haidmühle Cultural Landscape Museum showcases natural beauty and cultural relics outdoors at their original locations; five museum trails link the sites. The trails each have a different thematic focus: the “Goldener Steig” nature trail follows an old trade route in the footsteps of the packhorse traders, while the “Triftsteig” nature trail at the Kreuzbachklause traces the journey of timber. The “Haidmühler Industriesteig” presents Haidmühle’s industrial history. The trails therefore offer different themes to explore, including trade, timber and industrial history.
Freyung-Grafenau: Nature and culture across a wider travel destination
Across the wider travel destination of Freyung-Grafenau, the national park, gorge landscape and museums offer further inspiration for regional trip planning. Bavarian Forest National Park extends into Freyung-Grafenau district and opened on 7 October 1970 as Germany’s first national park. According to the zoning map dated 2024, 75.37 percent of its area is designated as natural zones.
In the Buchberger Leite wild stream gorge, steep rocky ridges force the boulder-strewn, cascading Wolfsteiner Ohe into a deeply constricted channel. Remnants of primeval forest have survived in the moss- and fern-rich gorge woodlands. An eight-kilometre themed hiking trail runs through the gorge between Freyung and Ringelai, with information panels and an accompanying brochure. Historic timber-driving walls, tunnels cut into the rock and surface canals bear witness to centuries of human activity there.
Built around 1700, the Schramlhaus in Freyung is now the city’s oldest farmhouse and, in its original condition, one of the oldest in Freyung-Grafenau district. It houses the Wolfstein Local History Museum and more than a hundred original, well-preserved examples of reverse glass painting, a form of religious folk art. At the Gabreta Archaeological Experience Park, reconstructed buildings feature designs based on original Celtic structures and symbolise Celtic finds from Paul Freund Hill. Expert-led tours about Celtic life can also be booked.
Near Neuschönau, the wildlife enclosure gives visitors the opportunity to learn about the national park and its native wildlife. Its circular trails are suitable for small children who are not yet able to walk long distances.
